Apparently Miriam Margolyes was offered the part before Kathy Bates. Whatever the world didn't want to see from Kathy Bates, it would have found rather more difficult to avoid seeing in the case of Miriam Margolyes. So the world got off lightly.

I agree. She was brilliant in that role, and it did take a lot of courage to display her nude body. Unfortunately, no one who saw it will ever forget it.
