Filmed in Omaha

Okay, I know this is going to make me look like a dork, but this movie was filmed in my home town. The scene where Jack Nicholson fights with the man who had an affair with his wife is filmed near a place where I used to buy books.

No, don't worry about it. It's cool to see a familiar place in a film, and Omaha probably isn't up on the silver screen too often. It's fun.

Seattle used to be a place where movies were filmed fairly often, but now they're filmed in Vancouver, BC because it is cheaper while the story says it's in Seattle.

Anyway, about 15 years ago Beau Bridges was in a movie where he plays a judge whose family is kidnapped. He has something like 12 hours to find them before they are killed. This movie was filmed in Seattle and there is a sequence where he is "running all over town" trying to find them. However it is all filmed in different angles on the same street. I remember telling the person I was watching the movie with that he would probably have better luck finding them if he didn't keep running around the block. :-)

Actually, Sean Penn directed a movie here to. It was called "Indian Runner" and it starred Viggo Mortenson who would, of course, later star in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Dennis Hopper and the late Charles Bronson (How cool is that?). Not to brag, but parts of "Paper Moon" were filmed here. I don't especially like to brag about the fact that scenes from "Terms of Endearment" were filmed in this state "I've never cared for that movie", but our then Governor Bob Kerrey was romantically linked to Debra Winger when it was filming. By the way, thanks for saying I'm not a dork, but I think that this second message officially makes me one.

I kind of like the visual sequences showing "greater Omaha" at the beginning of the film. Of course, they sort of set the mood for beginning of the story. It's grey and somewhat bleak. Obviously shot in winter. And the Woodmen building seems to dominate the landscape (a point made in the Bonus Features" of the DVD. Alexander Payne mentions the building being the most prominent in the area when he was growing up).

That seems to be the setting up of the theme that Warren Schmidt's life has been dominated by the Woodmen Corporation, leaving him a bleak, grey, and kind of lifeless at the end of his career.

I am sure Omaha has much cheerier things to offer.... :-)

If you ever visit Omaha, you should visit the Old Market. It can be quite beautiful during the fall and winter.

Is the Old Market in Dundee? I know they have a few stores there. I Live right off Dodge St.

"Historic Dundee" starts at about where happy hollow and underwood intersect and runs east until saddle creek or so, the "town" portion of dundee is only from 49th street to about 52nd though, some good bars and places to eat. The old market is downtown, the "downtown" and old market areas are between leavenworth and douglas, 10th street to about 14th-ish, the "old market" portion is more specifically to the brickroad portions.

Cool that you live around 50th street, so do I, but not on dodge.

Anyway I love when he fights the guy in the Lansky's parking lot, lansky's makes such good calzones.

I know this is an old post, but I think you are wrong about Paper Moon. It was filmed in parts of Missouri, but not Omaha.

My sister was an extra in the UNL scenes. She ended up on the cutting room floor though.
She said Jack winked at all the girls.

The Bakers was filmed near where I used to live, just off of 144th and Milard Ave. I'm surprised that while Warren lived in Dundee, we drove all the way to Millard for groceries!

Is that book store you are talking about around like 60th and Q. I forget, but I live around the Papillion area and I know there is a place that looks very familiar in that 60th and Q area. Or perhaps it's 60th and L...

Well anyways, it's definitely filmed in the late fall or winter. A lot of days look like that, it's a VERY depressing time of year. Everything is dead, it's cold, and it's usually overcast. But in the summer, it's not a bad city unless you are in the wrong part of town :)

I just saw this movie again on HBO. I also live in Nebraska, and I love his trip across the state. I especially love the visit through Grand Islands archway. More people should visit the state of Nebraska.
