Who else thought the big Native American cashier guy was “Chief”?

"Chief" being "Chief Bromden" (actor Will Sampson) from One Flew over The Cuckoo's Nest (1975) At first I thought it might've been him, and I thought to myself, Wow, what a cool idea for a cameo--how clever. And wasn't that nice of Nicholson to toss a bone to an old pal? But sadly the actor died in 1987 at the age of 53. The cashier was played by Lester Kills Crow

It never occured to me because I knew Will Sampson had passed on. But if you are interested in 'salutes' to past Nicholson films, check out the deleted scene on the DVD that offered a variation on the diner scene from 'Five Easy Pieces'. If you haven't seen that film perhaps you should before checking out the deleted scene on the 'About Schmidt' dvd. The original is a very memorable scene and will make the one on Schmidt a little more interesting.

Let's never come here again because it would never be as much fun.

Yes, there is a town called Broken Bow but there is no Indian population there. I DOUBT that there is even one there.

Yeah, I thought that as well when I first watched this.
But google searches at the time gave me the same result you discovered.

I didn't mistake him for Will Sampson (in his old age). Sampson was 6′5″ and the guy in the film was noticeably shorter, not to mention he didn't look like Sampson.
