Was there ever a reason given why the police chief (?) told the press conference that the men who assaulted the prisoner transport used AK-47s? Was it a continuity error? That just seems like a huge goof to make.
It's not like the character had any incentive to say that AK-47s were used either.

I understand that confusion if I heard it on TV or read it online; but from the Captain Chief of Police? I would take his (and his department's) whole knowledge of weaponry as a joke after that mistake.
I think it was a mistake on the writers part. AK47s were used in the opening sequence.
shareThe average police officer is not the expert on weapons they make them out to be in movies. To most of them, the gun is just a tool of the trade. The upper echelons of large departments usually consider them only a necessary evil and probably couldn't even tell you the manufacturer of the standard issue sidearm in their department. Back when I was a firearms salesman, whenever I had an off duty officer come into the store, I'd often ask them what was their service pistol was. The most common answer was, "Uh...a gun. I don't know, I just carry it."
That an LAPD police captain would mistake a TEC-9 for an AK doesn't seem too far off the mark.

There was a very famous shootout with the police in a bank robbery in the 90's I think. The criminals used AK-47 and shot more than a 1000 rounds. The police was heavily outgunned (as in 9 mm vs AK-47). The perps were wearing heavy military grade armor, In the end it came to headshots in street shootouts.
Now with SWAT snipers wouldve take them easily.

shareDon't You get it? It is for the press. They say it was AK-47s just the people think "the criminals were heavily armed, crime is spiraling out of control! But we got it under control! See what good job we are to doing!" etc. They remade the team exactly because of the bad rating in the press, remember?
