Do SWAT operate in 5 man teams? I would have thought they send in larger squads..?

I think you're probably right, but a 5 man team is more movie friendly. It's the same with war stories. Most platoons are quite large, but films usually just focus on small squads of soldiers, arguably for convenience.

While swat do arrive on a scene in large numbers, they are divided by smaller teams. Each team focussing on a different task or entry point. Where there is only ONE entry/exit point they do work in larger teams as they breech in larger number to overtake the room
