What is a redneck?

Sorry I'm not from america but I keep hearing this word. Is it like a hippie? I'm assuming but I don't know.

A 'redneck' is someone who lives in a poor, small town that could be rural. They listen to country music, drink lots of beer, and are fans of Jerry Springer and other such shows. They love monster truck shows, food eating contests, big boobs, and cut off shorts.

Hahaha, it's a horrible stereotype. Google Jeff Foxworthy.

Many southern people call themselves rednecks. While it can be used as an insult, many people take pride in the term. Nowadays it basically means that they're simple southern folks who enjoy low-key lifestyles.

We're not free. Circumstance is what controls me, just like everyone else.

K, just so you know the term doesn't apply only to Southerners, it also applies to Idahoans lol, trust me, I know plenty of Idahoan, born and raised, rednecks. Idaho has been called Hicktown, USA, so it's not just Southerners lol.

I think "Captain Planet" is something that should be mandatory to watch nowadays.

The word's origins refer to men who worked outside so much, the sun turned their necks red.

This word was a sneer on simple, hard-working country folks that people took to be ignorant because those people were basically ignorant and rude, and now the word has devolved even further to describe well, what everyone else is describing on this board. It is used rather loosely, like the term "trailer trash," which I abhor. Living in a mobile home makes you less well-off than many, but it doesn't make you trashy. Basically, these terms often reduce people to less than nothing.

I agree sometimes people are trashy, but a lot of times these terms get thrown around for people who are just "country." I guess Jeff Foxworthy's version of "redneck" is probably pretty benign and often funny though.

Yep..Robble is right......
redneck.......average joe outside worker...sunburned back of the neck. Typically an agricultural worker, but basically manual outdoor worker...typical southern thang......

And, referring to the OP's original guess as to the meaning...just about the opposite of a hippie.

Everyone has good definitions, except Jack. That was rude and you're a complete moron.

There are hippie rednecks, but I get what you're saying. There are rednecks almost everywhere in America. They dont always have southern accents. Really rednecks exist around the world, they just have various other names.

I've always thought that the term 'rednecks' came from labourers who toiled in the sun. But I have read that the term may have been coined about miners in West Virginia. They wore red bandanas around their necks. However it came about, it seems to refer to the unsophisticated working class of the Southern States. I think that the term 'hick' sounds that bit more derogatory than 'redneck.'

I myself think it's putting a southerner down, but I could be wrong. However, although I live in FL, I'm originally from NY and probably picked that up there.
