America
Hey all :)
I'll try to make this as simple as I can. I want some advice on where to live and work, so here's my story:
I'm a med student from Egypt. In less than two years, I'll have to try to get a medical residency somewhere that's not Egypt. There are many reasons for this. I have liberal views, and Egyptians were never tolerant or accepting. Secondly, people here are very misognystic and sexist. I always leave home in long pants and long sleeves yet they never fail to harrass me. Also, the weather is unbelievable and I have heat exhaustion, I faint very easily. The traffic is horrible, you'd spend like two hours in a place that you can normally drive through in just 10 minutes. And the most important reason of all, is that I have always dreamt of medical research. I have always wanted to go to the place with the latest medical advances both clinically and academically.
So after some digging, I found that Canada demands immigration (which I can not do), Australia would want me to work as a primary care doctor (which I don't want to do) and Britain doesn't welcome Arabs anymore, and I donot like their medical system that much anyway. The rest of European countries haven't made that much advance in the medical field, and neither did Asia,Africa or South America. So I figured America would be the best option, given that I want a place that's open-minded, has the latest scientific updates and somewhere I can do an adventure :)
Do you think I'd fit here ? Knowing that I'm liberal, and I don't wear a veil or anything of that sort. I have white skin. I am not saying those as advantages, I am saying these things to try to make an informed decision, to go to a place where I don't have to be judged and where I can enjoy my life.
Do you think that America would be nicer than New Zealand, Sweden, and other European countries of that sort ? Or nicer than South America (but there is the problem of not being on the same edge scientifically as NA) ? And more importantly, where should I live if I ever came here ? As it turns out from the books I read and the movies I watch, America isn't really all the same thing. I want a place that's open-minded, has concerts, events and at the same time I hate syscrappers and the stupid coffee-consuming busy-looking cities, I'd like tea, porches, festivals and country dances and all that. I am not sure I can fit into any place around that can have both.
I found the people on this board discussing American culture, the difference between American states, cities and towns. In a few boards actually. And I posted the same message in the others. I figured maybe someone here would help me. If you have any sources from which I can read more about the difference between these different lives, then please tell me about them, if they're small, have pictures and easy to go through.
I'll be very thankful for any suggestions, advice or discussions.
