Why did this movie get virtually no release?

According to boxofficemojo.com, the film's widest release was 19 theaters. After having seen it for the first time, and enjoyed it a good deal, I'm sure I'm not the only one that is wondering what was with the movie's assassination.

It appears to have raked in just over $400,000 - which is very poor indeed. I'm sure that such a stylish film would have done much better had it been released in more than a handful of theaters; esspecially with that fantastic trailer (found on the DVD).

Anyone know why the movie was abandoned? I certainly hope that it's financial/distribution failure hasn't discouraged Roman Coppola; I really want to see his second feature. This was an excellent debut.

reply

Probably because Roman decided for obvious sentimentakl reason to choose United Artists as distributor, which since MGM (Kerkovian) took it over releases practically nothing properly. Hopefully he'll make a better deal next time and leaves old sentiments aside.

reply

Hey there,

Thanks for the reply. What "obvious sentimental" reasons do you mean? The fact that his dad sorta got his big break with UA back in the late '60s? I doubt that would make him too sentimental, since his Dad didn't seem to have much sentiment for that period anyways.

This movie is better than:
MI:3
Poseidon
RV
The Da Vinci Code

It may not be the best movie ever made, but it deserves better than what it got. Everyone I know that I have shown the movie to enjoyed it thouroughly.

Because it was a work of art and works of art aren't high on the list of films that studios put out. CQ-art, no release. Latest brain dead action adventure, derivative peice of trash, one million theaters coast to coast.

this movie came out in 2001.

there probably would have been more interest in this film if it hadn't been for 9-11.

Oh, come on. You know I'm your hero.

reply

You mean the "Donnie Darko" Factor? Could be.
But it still guess it's UA's fault.

I just happened to see this movie in blockbuster on the shelf. I watched it and loved it. when the blockbuster i rented it from put it up for sale, I bought it. I think they sold it for liek 6 bucks.
