So we're to assume people were much more 'civilized' back then?
Because nowadays I can only imagine people would BUM RUSH that kid for his tray full of caramels!
That surprised me, that no one did.

Hmm, good point.

I could still see some unscrupulous people (or truly desperate moms) stealing his candy somehow though.

well I'm sorry to tell you but jews are mostly very educated people, they respect their religion, they are not taught to steal and from a little kid.. I know theses days people act as savages so you might not understand that kind of behavior.

I guess you didn't see that scene with the old lady carrying that pot of beans and the man ran up and tried to take the pot from her but as they struggled back and forward, the pot ended up dropping, spilling the beans all over the ground. Then the man laid down on his belly to scoop the beans into his mouth, like a dog, with the old lady crying and beating him over the back with his hat. That was one of the most disturbing scenes in the whole movie, IMO. When the human body goes without food to the point of starvation, there's no telling what one will do. Some people, including religious people, have resorted to cannibalism and others have gone completely mad and lost their minds all due to starvation so you'll never know what you might do in that situation.
