Hi I have never see this programme (not sure if it is a film or a programme series that was shown on the bbc or something), I love James D'arcy's acting and I was just wondering if it was worth me buying the DVD. It would be great to hear from anyone who has seen it. Whats your opinion?
Yes, I agree. Again, I haven't read the book, but this is a beautiful work in its own right. Wonderfully filmed, good script and acted brilliantly. All the actors are very strong in their roles. This version, I think, is much better than the movie that came out around the same time, starring Anne Hathaway and Christopher Plummer among others. If you want the shorter, lighter, more sprightly and given-the-Hollywood-soap-and-clean treatment go for the big movie ... but I prefer this one, for its greater depth and dare I say, greater humour! (Not to spoil anything, but wait for the Squeers family to enter! Laughs (and tears) galore! Fanny Squeers and her friend Tilda are a delight.)
The DVD is money well spent for the film, although the extras aren't anything special.
I got it on DVD recently, and I was reminded of just how great it is. All of the acting is first rate, the costumes and scenery are good- and yes, I have to agree Fanny Squeers and Tilda are hilarious. I forgot how good they were. Not to give too much away, but I especially love their argument after playing cards.
I saw this adaptation of it before I read the book, and it does the book justice. Obviously it couldn't have everything in, but James D'Arcy's portrayal of Nicholas is brilliant, although I am a little biased. The characterizations are all very faithful, even the minor ones, and it is WELL WORTH BUYING.
