The resemblence wad downright spooky! Everything about the film was extremely accurate and well-done. About the only minor quibble I could come up with was that Bob Cerv had been on the Yanks the year before, then went to the Angels in the expansion draft...and didn't come BACK to the Yanks until mid-season in '61...so he WASN'T rooming with Maris when they started the season.
But, if that's the biggest historical inaccuracy a baseball nerd like myself can find--unlike in Titanic, Pearl Harbor, Elizabeth, etc., etc., then it's in pretty darn good shape!
By the way, for those of you who AREN'T old-time baseball fans or big BB nerds, there IS a happy ending...at least to the career. Maris, who continued to be miserable & abused by the media in New York, finally "escaped" back to Missouri in 1967. He was traded to the Cardinals, where he & his family enjoyed two relaxing and successful seasons. The Cardinals won the pennant both years (winning the World Series in 7 games in '67, then losing in 7 in '68), before Rog retired. He didn't hit many home runs there, but was still a great fielder and a great clutch hitter who is still fondly remembered in St. Louis. The press treated him well there & he was much more relaxed & happy...as I'm sure his family was.
He retired & was immediately given a high-level job by Augie Busch, owner of the Cardinals & Anheiser Busch Beer...he happily worked for Busch the rest of his life...which, tragically, only lasted into his mid 50s.

I agree, the only problem with your post is he lived until 85, not the mid 50s, but thats just a typo, I would assume. (You can't possibly know all that and think he somehow died before he set the record :))

Barry Pepper was amazing in this movie. I was crying! He's just got so much power when he's onscreen. He's gorgeous AND he's talented. Go him! :) He's honestly an incredible actor.

Pepper looked a lot like maris, it is eerie. Jane doesn't really look a lot like Mantle, but he does a good job of playing the Brash, cocky, Mick. I find it amusing that the whole Yankee organization from Steinbrenner to Jeter got mad when Dave Wells wrote a book that chronicled his partying. both the Babe and Mick liked a good time.
shareI disagree. I think that Pepper looked as much like Maris as Jane did like Mantle. They both did a great job, and both looked their parts, although a little physically small compared to the M&M boys.
sharehey BamOpieCole..as much as i agree with you about barry and all that,he is a happily married man with his wife Cindy and daughter Anneliese...*sigh* Ohwell.
Toad:Dont you people EVER die?Guess not,so Screw you guys im off home...

Pepper does an amazing job as Maris. It's just amazing how much he looks like Roger Maris and he really nails the role to perfection also. Jane does an incredible job also. Kudos to Crystal for casting those dudes!
