I can't believe how they treated Maris. I'm only 27, but I was hoping Roger Maris would hold the record forever. The rubbish that man had to go through ... it's to the point where I dislike Babe Ruth. The media, when the movie came out, blasted Billy Crystal, saying he made them look bad, that they all really wanted Maris to break the record, but I think we all know better.
This was a great movie, the third baseball movie that has brought me to tears (still does).
"When I left you I was but the learner. Now I am the master."
New York Media = Degenerate, self-serving, fair-weather ba$terds! Of course they didn't like having such a clean mirror as this movie held up to their faces. Accurate? Ask Roger Clements...ask Eli Manning in 6 mos. I loved this movie almost as much for the accuracy of the portrayal of the NY media as I did for the baseball story.
btone, I agree 100%. One of my favorite charactes was Milt Kahn, who was the only guy who wasn't necessarily pro-Roger, but he was always for doing the right thing, like when he tried to stand up to Frick and the other reporters regarding the asterisk.
I'm sure that the reporters' roles were all composite roles and didn't really represent actual people, but only displayed the general mindset of the media.
Seriously, I 100% agree-I HATE THE NY MEDIA! They are so cut-throat, its not even funny. They only knock people, I seriously can't remember them complementing someone legitimately. Someone never does good in New York, they just "didn't blow the game." Look at someone like Armando Benitez-one bad game-and he becomes "the worst closer in baseball." When at the time-(and still now, with the Marlins) he's the best closer in baseball. He got booed all the time. Same with Scott Strickland, Jerome Burnitz, etc. Even Jeter got booed. (As you could prolly tell, I'm a Met fan, but yes, it happens just as bad to the Yankees.) I see the same people cheering a player when they get the game winning hit that booed them when they slumped. New York and Boston are probably the worst Cities to play in.
Also yes, I am also to the point where I hate Babe Ruth, but mainly because of other people, not because of him. I hear in real life he was an a$$h013, too though. He's very overrated, he was just before his time. If he played today, he'd be a .240 hitter.

I think that what 61* does best is portray Maris' uneasiness just playing in New York. If you read Maury Allen's book "Roger Maris: A Man For All Seasons", you'll find that he was very comfortable playing for Kansas City, as well as St. Louis late in his career.
As for which does a better job of portraying the media treatment of Maris in '61, the film or the book, I couldn't say. It's probably been about five or six years since I read the book, but it's solid nonetheless.
im from boston i hate the yanks i hate new yorkers (the press) but i loved this movie that told the story of the most underated ball player of all time and its because of the fu**in Ny press he is not in it he mantle ford and berra are the only yankees i respect
Oh, come on. Think about the fan base they have to deal with on a daily basis. Philadelphia's the only city I can think of that's probably worse than New York City in terms of fickle, arrogant fans who are almost never satisfied.
Writers in certain cities play to their crowds. If the readership's vanilla, some write vanilla. If the readership's brash, some write brash.
