Roger Maris was from one of the Dakotas (forget if its north or south) and at one point a Yankees fan yells at him: "Go home you hick, this is Mickey's town!" It struck me as kind of funny since Mickey Mantle himself was born and raised in Oklahoma.
shareFYI-Fargo, North Dakota. You're right, Mickey was from Oklahoma, but he started his career and became such a name in New York, that the fans just thought of him as one of their own.
shareBig John, It's a funny thing - Yankee fans were always on Mantle when he first came up. They booed him and taunted him because so much was expected from him. He played his way out of it by winning the triple crown in '56 (I think), but they still had it in for him, until Maris got to New York, then Mick became their darling! Yankee fans of today get a bad rap, but they are infinitely more accomodating than the fans of the '50'S and '60's!
