I'm sure no one cares...

But Barry Pepper did a FABULOUS job with the North Dakota accent! I've seen so many movies where it's just cliched (Fargo has to be one of the worst), but there were moments in the film that almost made me giddy... the way he said certain words, his speech patterns... I felt like I was home! :)

I've always been a Maris fan, he was a hometown hero and all that, and thought this movie did a great job of capturing what baseball is all about.

I care! Loved this movie, and love Barry Pepper...I caught the tail end of this movie one night on HBO and I made my husband go out and buy the DVD...when I woke up for work the next day...there it was, my DVD sitting on the kitchen table...there is some great extra footage...shows a clip of Billy meeting M. Mantle on a talk show back in the 70's...Im glad Barry made you feel at home...

Amy - as a little boy Maris was my guy. He was class through and through. True, 1961 tested his nerves, but through it all he remained a good, decent man.

I can't say I'm familiar with the North Dakota accent, but I must say, I think Barry Pepper did an excellent job in this film. He is just one of those underrated actors that manages to portray his characters quite well; and even though I'm not familiar with baseball history, to me, he was Roger Maris.

it is just ... painful

I am also a North Dakotan and absolutely cannot stand the stereotype against us and how we "talk". It is mostly in part to the movie Fargo and all there "Ya know" and "Ya sure" dialogue. Since then, every time I travel to other parts of the US, they think that that is how we talk. So I did notice that Barry did a nice North Dakotan accent that is completely normal sounding.

I have always been a baseball and Maris fan also and it did a good job of showing who he really was. A good man, a family man, a good athlete, and a good representitive of a hardworking North Dakotan!

I am from Fargo, ND. and we do sort of have an accent!

reply

Yes, I know we do have an accent to people from other parts of the world or nation. Of course I don't hear it! :)

I am from Minnesota and I must say the first time I watched Fargo, I was so mad. The setting for Fargo should have been farther North. The Iron Range has that thick accent where Fargo and Brainerd accents aren't as pronounced.

Agreed. And the Coen Brothers are from Minnesota so I don't know why they couldn't set the film in their home state. But what's a catchy title for the movie if not Fargo?
