I read he did in fact have to sit out of September because of a leg infection, but was it actually a result of a flu shot?

almost everything said and showed in this movie was right on the dot. the scene showing mantle's infection was almost exactly like it really was. i saw an interview with mickey and billy crystal.

Mantle played in 154 games in 1961 albeit he wasn't 100% in quite a few. The movie does give the impression that he missed more time at season's end than he really did.

Remember that this was the first year they had the 162 game season, so he did end up missing the final 8 games or so.
shareYou are so right when you say everything was right on the dot. Billy Crystal nailed it right down to Tracy Stallard's uniform number! So many people who make movies about actual events get it wrong. This one got it completely right, and that's one of many reasons why it is so impressive.
