Bob Cerv

In the movie 61, Bob is a little used guy off the bench. That year he was. He says at one point, "I'm not even good enough for them to write about." There was a time when he was. In 1958 when he was with Kansas City, he hit 38 home runs, beat Frank Robinson at the home run derby, was voted onto the all-star team beating out Ted Williams for the starting spot, and finished fourth in voting for MVP that year. He also still holds the team record for most home runs in a season by a Kansas City Royal. Just thought I'd share.

His 1959 wasn't half-bad, either — .285, 20, 87.

In those days, though, the A's were half-jokingly thought of as a Yankees' Triple-A club, much as the St. Louis Browns were to the Red Sox a few years earlier.

Thanks for posting this. He may not have felt "good enough to write about" among Mantle, Maris, Ford et al, but all ballplayers' accomplishments should be noted.

Seriously, thanks to both of you for speaking up for the guy. It's got to be really gratifying to know you (or your father, or uncle) are being remembered as a good major-leaguer.
