the ending with the charity concert proves just how much Hollywood comedy has lost its balls
Rat Race is a remake of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. The ending to that movie worked well because they managed to find a way for everyone chasing the money to lose it involuntarily. In the struggle for the money on the fire escape the briefcase opens and all the money falls down to the crowd below. It was a good ending because they all lost the money without compromising their greedy chase for the money that had driven the entire movie up to that point.
But in Rat Race the money chasers all suddenly abandon their greed once they end up at the charity concert. There was no good reason for them to do that after all they had been through. It doesn't make any sense and it's a jarring change in tone from the rest of the movie. And worst of all, it just isn't funny at all. Which is really bad because the movie is a comedy. There's nothing entertaining about them giving up the money to charity. That charity concert had absolutely no business being in that movie.
It would have been much better if they found a way for all of them to involuntarily lose the money. Or once they ended up at the charity concert they would still keep the money. Or they would somehow involuntarily lose the money at the concert and they would all be upset that they lost the money without any consolation from the fact that it ended up going to charity. Anything along those lines would have seemed harsh and made them look bad but it could have actually had a chance at being funny.
