Meet Me in St. Louis breakdown

I was wondering what happened during the breakdown on the set of Meet Me in St. Louis. Because it's not on the DVD and I've read posts and people are talking about it being cut. I didn't see the original broadcast so I just really want to know what happened. I was noticed on my Chicago DVD that there was a tralier for this movie and there was a scence where she was in the Trolley Song clothes and she is having a breakdown.

I just came across a VHS copy of this show that I'd taped off the air, so if you could maybe tell me exactly what it is that you're looking for, I might be able to be of help.

What happened during the breakdown on the Meet Me in St. Louis set and why did she breakdown.

I can't say that I'm a walking encyclopedia on Judy, but from all accounts, the set of MMiSL was quite a happy one. Though she had started to get a little, shall we say, "sketchy" due to the fact that her amphetamine usage was starting to take hold and Vincente Minnelli was having to keep her in check more often than perhaps he'd have liked to, she was beginning to fall in love with Minnelli. Her nervous energy doesn't seem misplaced, but more like what one might expect from a teenager. (Esther's 17) Some people consider her MMiSL performance her finest!

By any chance are you talking about her breakdown on Girl Crazy?

reply

No I heard some people talking about a break down during MMISL. You can see a second of it on the tralier on the Chicago DVD.

please, please, don't think i'm being a smart-a__. but an emotional breakdown? a physical breakdown? a set breakdown? this is what i'm getting at... like i say, i might know what you're getting at...

I don't know what knid of breakdown. I've never seen the scene thats why I'm asking. I know it should be before or after the Trolley Song.

The breakdown she had on MMiSL was a nervous breakdown, as she wasn't being destroyed by the drugs at the point, and the pressures of MGM weren't weighing down her. Adulthood, was, however, weighing down on her, and I recall in the scene her sort of begging for help and Minnelli stepping in and agreeing to be the one to watch out for her.

And from such a union we got Liza.

Thank you for telling me what happened

I like the way you managed to say, "And from such a union we got Liza." And without any editorial comment! ('cause ain't none necessary!) You just made me realize the fact that Liza, just like Mama, is capable of turning in fantastic performances if somebody keeps her on a tight rein. I guess no one since Bob Fosse in Cabaret has been able to do that. Even Martin Scorscese in New York New York, alas.
