Was Judy really only friends with arty shaw? or were they officially going out?

I really liked this movie, It's very good, I hope sometime in the near future I'll be able to own it so I can watch it whenever I feel like it

shareI read that what Artie Shaw seemed to need was a friend and he found one in Judy Garland. I just loved the scene when they were on a date. The dialog between them was great. You could see he got a kick out of her.

This is how I heard it too...her whole obsession with Shaw apparently reinforced her blatant insecurities about her looks. It's been well-documented over the years that despite all the talent Judy was blessed with, she would have traded it away in a hot minute in exchange for looking like Lana Turner or Ava Gardner...Judy was obseessed with the idea of being beautiful and hated the fact that she wasn't a "glamour puss."
