La Vie En Rose

With all due respect to this film, it should have been so much more. A biopic about Judy Garland could be one of the greatest films ever made, and this TV movie certainly picked a formidable cast. But WHY didn't they just make a feature film?

In my opinion, Garland deserves to have an Oscar-winning production made about her. Edith Piaf was, in a lot of ways, the Judy Garland of France. La Vie En Rose is an amazing film that did its best to paint an accurate picture of the woman's life. Why not do the same for Judy?

They could even keep Judy Davis and Tammy Blanchard- just make an awesome film with stellar production value, not a super long miniseries with a choppy script and rushed performances.

i totally agree, this would have been better with higher production value. but even HBO could have done an amazing job with her life. I'm currently watching John Adams and it doesn't seem rushed and the script is AMAZING as usual w/ HBO miniseries. but either way, someone will make a feature film of judy garland's life someday. i don't think judy davis should do it again though, there is other untapped talent out there, just look at marion cotillard!! but great comparison of films. i just got the miniseries on Netflix and was automatically reminded of La Vie en Rose particularly the scenes where the singers are back lit from the stages perspective.

I don't think that anybody seriously thought that a good Judy Garland biopic could be made. She's such a huge Superstar. Look at all the terrible attempts at making a Marilyn Monroe biopic. I think what was originally intended was a cheap TV movie, but once they got Judy Davis on board the acting values went through the ceiling and elevated what would have been a mediocre movie into an amazing masterclass of acting. I bet if they'd made this a a big budget biopic, then they probably would have cast another actress.

I agree with the La Vie en Rose comparison as Judy Davis' performance is equally as amazing as Cotillard. Had this been made as a cinema release, I'm sure that Judy Davis would have won the Oscar for that year. It makes Nicole Kidman's Oscar winning performance as Virginia Woolf look like childs play.
