GRACE KELLY

Grace Kelly did not deserve the Oscar. In fact, she had fourth billing in The Country Girl and could have gotten a Supporting nomination. She won basically because she had three hit movies out in 1954: Rear Window, To Catch A Thief, and Country Girl.
No matter how much Judy's film was edited and cut, she still deserved it. And years later it was revealed that Judy lost by only 4 votes and it was the 4 Warner brothers who voted against her. Even Grace Kelly's father said "it's too bad they couldn't have made it a double award so Judy Garland could have one too".

Her father never said that. Urban legend.
And Grace Kelly is totally lead in "The Country Girl". She received second billing after Bing Crosby.

Judy should of won best actress in A Star Is Born

aghh you dont know what you're talking. Judy deserved it and yess Grace Kelly did not deserve it at all. Grace Kelly was gorgeous which no one will object to but you know what she didnt have any real talent. Judy was a singer, dancer, actress, and had a beauty that Grace Kelly didnt have and couldnt sum up because she had a force that pulls you to her. Grace Kelly just gave a handy mandy to the right person at the right time.

You'll get no argument here...I finally saw THE COUNTRY GIRL for the first time about 10 years ago. I thought Bing Crosby was amazing, but there's no way Kelly deserved that Oscar over Judy...I think they gave it to Kelly just for having the guts to dress down and play a decidedly unglamorous character.

I'm not saying that Judy didn't deserve it, but Grace Kelly also received the Best Actress award from the National Board of Review AND The New York Film Critics Circle that year.

Kelly won the NYFCC for three of her performances in three critical hits. And don't get me started on the NBR, they maybe the oldest but they are now one of the least respected.

I honestly love Judy Garland, but Grace Kelly didn't "rob" Garland of the Oscar. If anything, as terrible as it sounds, Garland hurt herself by the relationships she had with people at MGM. Plus, Kelly had worked with some "big" male stars prior to "Country Girl" (Jimmy Stewart, Gary Cooper, Clark Gable, William Holden, Bing Crosby, Ray Milland, Cary Grant), so she definitely had her support (probably among many male voters, who let's face it, if they don't particularly care for musicals, weren't going to vote for Garland over the radiant Grace Kelly).

Anyway, if you compare the two performances, I think Judy Garland is better. However, Grace had the fortune of having 3 pictures out that year (Dial M for Murder, Rear Window, and Country Girl); her role was one that was different at the time (though now it is more common -- a beautiful woman de-glamming herself), and finally, she was a newcomer and undeniably a beautiful young thing. Unfortunately, as good of an actress as Judy Garland was, she created some bad relationships with others (mostly studio execs), and I believe that that eventually cost her the Oscar. So while I may agree Garland deserved to win, I think people in general are way too harsh on Grace Kelly. I've read that she never really expected to win; and Garland's behavior post-Oscar is really off-putting. No one likes a sore loser.

Agreed, Judy’s was the superior performance, but Grace Kelly was the epitome of what a star was supposed to be in the 1950s. She was beautiful (in the traditional way), blonde (Hollywood LOVES blondes!) came from a well-to-do family, became an overnight sensation, and then in the height of her career she retired to marry Prince Charming. Grace’s life (at least from an outsider’s perspective) was the personification of what a star was supposed to be. Kelly had the advantage of having three extremely profitable films out in 1954 vs. Judy’s single, very expensive, very long epic. Judy had burned too many bridges, and Kelly was the “it girl” of the moment. And Oscar just loves it when you “deglamorize” yourself for a part (though Grace Kelly without much makeup is STILL too glamorous)!

Judy probably should have won for "A Star is Born". I'm a huge Judy fan. But, remember that it is how the Academy votes in a 5 way race and that over half of those voters are technical artists who might have felt fed up with Judy's history of being late on set or not even showing up at all.

If it is not in the frame, it does not exist!
