Miles better in Japanese.
I'd recommend you watch the original Japanease dub of Cardcaptors, Cardcaptor Sakura, it'll make you not want to the watch the english dub ever again. That is of course if you can put up with english subtitles. :)

shareI borrowed all seventy episodes of Cardcaptor Sakura off a friend some time ago. I watched an episode of it in English on Nickolodeon a couple of weeks ago. *beep* Christ did they dub it like that to torture Japanese prisoners of war! I've been after those two Cardcaptor Sakura box sets ever since. anyone know where to get one?
shareI agree... I hate the dubbed version of CCS and the Japanese is so much better... Personally, I think that all CCS fans would rather eat crap than watch the dubbed version. I hate how they cut out so many scenes in the shows. It's so annoying. They changed all of the characters names and personalities... The thing I hate the most about Cardcaptors is the voices of Kero and Sakura. Seriously, they just make me want to puke. They gave Sakura and Kero WAY more attitude than the orginal characters had. And they make Sakura sound a lot more older, when she's only 10 years old! By the way, just to let everyone to know, Sakura's name is pronounced SA-koo-ra. Not f-ing sa-KURR-ra!!! The Americans were being idiots and decided to change the name pronunciation.
shareRight i have to say this!
If you had any nerve, you would have searched for the UK dub of Cardcaptors. It contians all the episodes (minus the yaoi\yuri elements and a few others) and is in the right order.
Read my other post to find more. Then search the P2P network or tell nevelda to either broadcast the UK dub worldwide or put it into public domain.
There,sussed.
I know there is a lot of differences betweet Card Captor Sakura and Cardcaptors but to make fun of the voices in REALLY low of course there going to be different American voices are a hell of a lot different then Japanease Voices. I have watched both and yes Sakura's voice is cute but hell I don't even know small kids with a voice like that over here. Sakura's voice in Cardcaptors is NORMAL for us.
It's best to think of Cardcaptors and Card Captor Sakura as two different shows but hey if you want to pick out everything they changed and left out go read the Manga cause the Anime left a hell of a lot out of there like how Sakuras dad is the other half of Clow Reed.
dissing Cardcaptors just because of its voices is silly. I compare Sakura's voice to DOA's Hitomi. It cute but strong, and doesn't make the charather sick, it actully gives her strengh.
shareI got sick of the voices so soon I didn't really have time to see what else was wrong with it. But after comparing the Yugioh mangas to TV series (dubbed) i have an idea how they may have butured it.
shareMy issues with the English isnt with the voice acting but with editing. They cut FAR too much out, the biggest of which being the Syaoran and Sakura relationship.
I suggest you read this then

Lets not cry over spilt milk! If we start being picky about both versions we are going to as the arctile says "divisions, minority groups, and worst of all, straight out hate."
Forget the dub. I just pretend it never happened. I love "Cardcaptor Sakura" but "Cardcaptors"? Huh? never heard of it.
"I guess they were like, Holy chips or something"

Geez, i am going to have to repeat this every time someone forgots that their are differences between the dub and sub which make them both not the same and the same.
Did you by any chance catch it on GMTV? Well you been had as you only had 40 of the 70 episodes shown, Nevlda dubbed all 70 but nearly every distibuator messed up the distibation of the product. Even ITV (who broadcasted all 70 episodes) in 2001 who relagated the final episodes to sundays.
To be honest, nobody deserves to own distibation rights to this product unless they can and will broadcast all 70 propley, otherwise the anime should put them on DVD or be put into public domain.
Dynamo, that links doesn't work.
I wish that someone else would dub CardCaptor Sakura. I mean CCS uncut and English dubbed with good voice actors would be great.
I loved Cardcaptor Sakura but Cardcaptors was comically bad in the all areas that were edited. The relationship between Sakura and Syaoran is really one of the best relationships in all of anime, and I still can't believe they completely cut it out. I mean there was nothing inappropriate in it or anything.
Oh, blast it, he ditched the article.
Right, i have got a copy of the aritcle on my computer let me upload it to you... here we go!
http://rapidshare.de/files/5158537/1.htm.html
Download that on to your harddrive and hey presto. And i will go and see the author about it too, he is doing a refit of the site anyway.
I used to love the English version, but it cancelled on Nick, so I got the whole series on Ebay but it was Japanese, I really loved it, but then I saw a bit on Youtube, with this english languauge and Sakura's voice made me cringe up. It was like she was 10 years older than she was. Besides they had completley changes what Li said it was supposed to be that he was very worrid about Sakura so he dropped by the house on the way to the festival and they changed it too it was on my way. If you want to get the full impact of the wonderful thing that is the Syaroan and Sakura relationship then get the Japanese version.
shareI remember the first time I saw this show was the English dub. I hated it. I don't really care for magical girl anime and this was sort of like dumbed down magical girl anime. (The dub at least.)
However, I became curious when so many anime and manga fans LOVED it. I soon learned about how butched this anime had been. So, I watched the uncut Japanese version.
I love it. Uncut it's great. I have no comment on voice actors for either versions (though I will say that it has some of my seiyuu idols in the Japanese version). The part I love the most is the character interactions and relationships. Of course, this is where the dub took the most punches. I thought Sakura's crush on Yukito was cute and I love the Yukito and Touya pairing. Tomoyo's crush was touchingly sad. Pretty much all of these relationships were cut or edited heavily. I can understand why they would edit some things, but I won't get into all of that. I just know I don't like the dub, but I love the original Japanese version.
yep one of the worst dubs of alltime
be thankful most dubs aren't this bad
I dunno. I think Samurai Pizza Cats had it worse. The writers weren't even allowed to see the original Japanese script (translated). They just had to write a completely new one based on what they saw happening. It also seemed a lot of them didn't know much about Japanese culture, so some of it was completely lost. It wasn't a terrible dub, but by the standards of being butchered, it was much worse than CCS. Unless they did the same to the CCS scripts. (I haven't seen the CCS dub in a very long time, so I'm not good at comparing them anymore.)
There are probably more. Dubs have been getting much better as of late though. It's usually just the ones they try to target towards children that get sent to the butcher's shop to die.
And again... the truth is shown here:

You keep targeting Nevlada, and you will be pleasing Disney and WB's plans.

Hey guys I've been using this site for ages, but only registered tonight. I love cardcaptor sakura! When it used to be shown on Austar (English Version) I loved it. I don't actually remember any of it (NOTHING), but I remember liking it. I started downloading the japanese version about a week ago and I love it way more. When I went to a few fansites and read overviews while I waited for it to load I found out all these things like tori + julian and in my head I scream WHAT?! HOW DID I MISS THAT?! Then I read about the cuts. Stupid cuts.
I have been learning Japanese since I started school (9 years ago) and I love learning it. All my classmates think I'm nuts, because I study Japanese for fun. It is awesome listening to Japanese being spoken (with English subtitles); I understood most of what was being said. I love the original version.
Even though I prefer the original, because I'm an insane person who studies for fun and has lots of other weird quirks (I refuse to have matching earrings), my friend and I emailed cartoon network with a request to put the english version back on. We don't expect that they will.
It has occurred to me that I use to many brackets.
-Emma.
Hey Emma! Another Australian CCS fan ^_^
I used to watch the show on Austar as well...so much was cut from the second series, which really got on my nerves.
*hugs her japanese ccs dvds*
cardacaptors the english version lol
is on itv2 7:30 in da mornings i used to watch it wen i was a bit younger n now im watching it again just b4 i go 2 secondry sch ahhh memories lol. ive neva seen it in a shop and i dnt ave an ebay account so i wud neva b able 2 buy dis japenese version ya all tlkin bout lol. but is da english version realli dat bad????
The english version IS that bad. They have editid it so much that hardly any of the original story is still there.
"Yes, dudes and dudettes! Major league butt-kicking is back in town!"
I managed to track down the original series cheap on ebay. The original is so much better cause this version was censored till the cows came home. No jokes, no full episodes, no relationships and worst of all? No Sakura and Syaoran romance!
PS: Even in this mess of a dub the English version, wasn't it still obvious that Sakura and "Li" had a crush on each other?

O.O You've got to be kidding me... they edited the fluff out?
I saw most of the Dutch version a year or so ago... It's pretty good, actually. The episodes are in the right order, most material is left in (though I'm sure they censored some stuff), and it's got a really cute translation of Catch You Catch Me as the opening. ^_^
Saw the first movie in Japanese. Subless, sadly, so I've missed a lot, but twas pretty enoug ^^;
I loved it better when Cartoon Network aired the show and both movies...in Portuguese (sorry to say, I can but speak English), leaving nothing unchanged. I'll be on the lookout for an English-subtitled episode on LimeWire.

Miss Carlos, I can't speak for veryone else here, but personally, I don't hate dubs. I actually still watch about half of my anime dubbed. My problem with Nelvanas take on CCS was the amount that they cut from the series.
Okay, so if you're going to be screening this show on western T.V, fair enough, the homosexual relaionships may not be so family friendly in the U.S.
But, to cut out roughly 5 minutes of show per episode, no, that's wrong.
To change a characters personality so much they are now a completely different character, that's wrong.
To cut out, without reason, one of the major events in the whole series, including cutting the final episode completely in half just to avoid it, that is wrong.
By the time the second season came along, Nelvana had begun going too far with their editting choices. To cut the syaoran and Sakura relationship from the show was a very silly move from Nelvana.
Their reasons were obviously that they believed Syaoran and Sakura too young for a relationship, however, I might point out, their relationship was never innappropriate to begin with. The most they ever do is hug.
Personally, I do change the channel, however, although I choose not to watch the dub, that still doesn't change the fact that it is now unlikely this great series will ever be done justice in the English speaking market.
I am thankful to Pioneer for releasing the series uncut on DVD, however, this uncut version of the show does not feature an uncut english dub.
That's what is unfair here. That's why so many fans still feel anger towards what Nelvana did.
If the show had been left as it was meant to be, this thread may not even exist.
Like I said, my problem has never been with the dubbing, but good dubbing does not excuse a company for editting a series so dramatically that it is no longer the same show that begun as.
Seriously if companies like ADV and Rightstuf can dub an anime AND stay true to the Japanese version, why can't Nelvana? An english dub is meant to be an english translation of a japanese anime. Translation, not hack job.
Nelvana tried too hard to make CCS, a cute, cheerful, magical, romantic, and dramatic girls cartoon into a stale, clean, and above all, politically correct cartoon with no hint of character development.
Sorry Miss Carlos, your pleas don't convince me to think otherwise.

But that's what I'm saying!! I sympathise with people who work on dubs, and am myself a fan of quite a lot of english dub actors. The point i was making was that my gripe was not with the dubbing of CCS but the editting.
Regardless of whether i had worked on a dub or not, my point is still valid. Thankfully, most anime that is dubbed these days isn't edittied, which is great to see, and the acting is only improving.
So, yes, I understand why you would want to defend dubs because, well, so do i.
It's just this particular work that i'm not fond of.
well, personally, i slightly prefer the dubbed version - I like the voices and the music much better, and also they cut out some of the really overly cute stuff from the Japanese version, which most people complain about but I actually prefer the slightly less sickly sweet dubbed one. Having said this, I still absolutely loved the Japanese one coz its really interesting to see it uncut, and some of the dubbed one isn't in order.
shareI am going to have to strongly disagree with you and everyone else saying the japense version is better. I watched a couple of episodes on youtube yesterday in japanese with english subtitles, and I almost fell out of my seat. The japanse version is utterly boring because for one I am a american who speaks english so I couldn't get into the show like I would if I was watching in the language I speak, secondly last time I checked kero and yue were MALES so why the hell did they sould like FEMALES. Sukura's voice is so annoying and chirpy that I literally cut the sound all the way down on my computer and just watched it in complete silence becasue I couldn't take two men sounding like women and the lead sounding like an annoying brat. Another thing was the gayness. I have come to expect that the japanese animators are in love with homosexuality the evidence being saliormoon, and now this, but it is just so much a person can take. I did not want to see julian and sukura's brother lovelorn looks, and touching.
I have two tapes in COMPLETE english of cardcaptors, and I am going to have to side with my country on this one. Their dubbing was perfect to me. The voice who does kero is excellent , and better yet it is a MALE'S voice like it is supposed to be. Sukurs sounds perfect julian/yue sounds like he's voice goes with him and so on. Bottomline I HATE the japense version, and it boggles the mind after what I saw yesterday on youtube that ANYONE can like it.If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.
can u tell me the link to cardcaptors in youtube so i can watch the episodes too?

Oaky now I've that I've seen both versions of this show, one of my personal favorites since it aired in the U.S. I will yes admit that I like Japanese Version better. Maybe I'm just saying this in hindsight, but the story makes a lot more sense now, when it goes in the right order. When the "first" episode appeard in the U.S. I was wondering why they didn't show her opening the book, (I hadn't seen this prior I was still new to Anime) so I figured it was done on purpose I figured the plot just picked up with no real intro. Of course I started reading all criticism about the U.S./Can. Version, and finally managed to see it. Now I love the Japanese version much more, but I'm very suprised, how many overexadurated the dubbing. I frankley would find both versions mediocer at, best in acting.
Me being a conservative did get used to the many bi-relationships in this series. I don't hate the series because of that I just think it makes it more intresting.
So in conclusion, many of the statments made are made by Animepurists, whom hate with a passion. Really if you people think the acting is horendus, then you need to watch a 4Kids Dub, and learn more about acting. Like I said I find both dubs (Japanese, and Nelvelna Dub) Mediocer.
In Japan, it sounds like most of the girls are on helium, in the U.S. it's dry, and riddled with poor lines here and there (such as Sakura's excuse in the Maze Card U.S. Episode)
I still like the Japanese better when it comes to story, plot, and character, but acting, it's not a whole lot better
---------------------------------------
Anime is Forever
What I hate more than the out of character voices and general out of characterness is how the dub completely tries to cut out anything relating to Japanese culture. They get rid of Japanese letters, the Japanese town name and never once mention any sort of Japanese food.
This sounds cheesy but watching the Japanese verision was very educational for me.It was one of the first animes that introduced me to Japanese culture. This version is just as appropriate for children.
"You cannot make desicions for someone. They can make their own desicions. You can only influence it.
I loved the English version when it was on Kids WB. However, now that I have seen the original I like that slightly better. Not to say the english version is horrid. I think both are good just that the japaneses is a little better, and has slightly more depth. I suppose I like the english vocie actors more too, but Sakura's "Hoyeee!!" scream is still good.
