It never says idt how they got the money in the first place. Obviously it was some kind of crime, but what?

I'm thinking it was a bank robbery and they hid the money before they went to prison (somehow.) Rick got out first because as Steve Buscemi's character says he got a lawyer, so then he probably took the money and ran away leaving his 3 accomplices high and dry.
