Blu Ray US release!

ALI will be finally available on US Blu Ray, the 17th of January 2017.

Finally a proper blu-ray release. I would put ALI among Mann's most impressive and meaningful work. But I wonder if this will be the theatrical cut or a new director's cut?

reply

I don't know yet for the "theatrical cut" or "new director's cut" but it seems that Mann is involved in this release so i guess it will be a new cut!
I already own the pretty good french Blu Ray but if it is a new cut with new extras i will buy it for sure!
And yes it's an underrated movie in Mann's career...brillant direction, cinematography and casting in this film...the boxing scenes are really impressive, the best i've seen on the big screen!!

I agree.

And the first 10 minutes are some of the best editing ever.

I hope they improved the structure of the film.

The longer DC was better overall, but some things didn't work.

Maybe this time.

Here it is:

It's called "Commemorative Edition"…But is is a new cut ?

I read months ago that mann was working on a third cut.

I have it and it is a new cut. Pretty much the director's cut release with a few new scenes and a little bit rearranged from the previous director's cut.

The ending is the most notable with the coda taken out and on the freeze frame image at the end, it simply gives Ali's birth date and death date. Fade to black and roll credits.

Thanks.

Is it the best version yet ?

An improvement ?
