A little disappointment with Season 2 DVD

I purchased my copy of season 2 yesterday and I was a bit disappointed. I had already heard that some of the music was editted out, but unfortunately, some scenes are as well. I've only been able to watch the 4 episodes on the first DVD and the 1st episode on the 2nd one. What didn't make much sense is, the singer Kina is announced in the club (also on the DVD cover, in the episode description it reads "Musical Guest: Kina"), yet you don't see her nor do they play her music. They also cut out scenes where Teri initially meets Kristine at Damon's and the scene where Bird returns to the shop for the 1st time since the accident (and she has no clients). Also, in the first episode on disc 1, the opening credits say there will be an appearance by Nicki Micheaux (who plays Lyla), yet, I never saw her in that episode. These are just some things I've noticed so far (and there may be more that I haven't caught yet), and I haven't even seen all 5 discs yet. Though this has disappointed me quite a bit, it's still better than the BET version, so it's worth the money. I just don't understand why was it such a problem with contracts/rights that the series couldn't be released quickly and uneditted like 'Friends' or 'Seinfeld'. The same thing with 'Girlfriends'--they had all sorts of issues with contracts/rights before they could release the DVD, and it took forever to be released. Is it that people on the black tv series just can't get along? What is the deal?

Despite the flaws, I'm still excited to have season 2 and hopefully it doesn't take as long to release the remaining seasons. I'm also hoping they won't be as "chopped up" like they did with season 2.

reply

Wow, a lot of those scenes sounds necessary. Especially the one wherre Bird returns to her job and doesn't have any clients. I'm dissappointed and I don't even have the DVDs yet. Hopefully they'll give us more in the future.

reply

Like I said, this is not the COMPLETE 2nd Season of Soul Food. That's the key word that CAUGHT my eyes, "COMPLETE!!" Like the first 1st season it tells us it is the COMPLETE FIRST SEASON OF SOUL FOOD. I'm just watching disc 2 and I can tell stuff has been chopped up and edited. Like when Maxine, Teri, and Bird are all together at Teri's house, and Bird tells the secret about Teri having panic attacks, and Maxine doesn't know. My thing is when did Teri tell Bird about the panic attacks? It was other little scenes that were edited too. I wonder why did they do this. But I guess we gotta take the good with the bad.

reply

jsc8430--You're right. I think b/c I've seen the show so many times, I'm missing things that I don't realize I'm missing. I'll have to watch this set more than once to catch all of the flaws. But, now that you mentioned it, they did cut out the scene where Bird goes to Teri's and when she gets in the house, she sees Teri's purse on the floor in front of the door and discovers her lying on the floor b/c she's had a panic attack (which I think is an important scene to have left in). Also, in the episode with Babyface, they cut out Blu Cantrell's appearance and her song (they play something else in it's place). Again, on the DVD cover, it says she's the musical guest in that episode, yet you don't see her (at least they didn't announce her and never show her like they did with Kina). I was fine with it at first, but the more I watch, I'm getting a little more aggravated. I feel as if they've given us any ol' mess just to shut us up, since we kept asking and petitioning for season 2. I'm starting to feel cheated. I really love this show (my favorite tv series ever), but I may have to think long and hard about buying the remaining seasons (if they release them) if they're chopped up like season 2 is. I'd really love to know what the real deal is, as to why it was necessary to do this to season 2.

reply

I just dont unserstand why they would do something like this???? - I mean what is the point, this is not BET

I wouldnt even realize they edited some parts out because I never really had time to watch it on Showtime but this still disappoints me

reply

I think you have a mix up. Because this is the "HELP" episode and I'm watching it now on the box set, they didn't edit that part out. That part is crucial. So you must be talking about something else.

jsc8430--If you're referring to me, let me write what you posted:

"I'm just watching disc 2 and I can tell stuff has been chopped up and edited. Like when Maxine, Teri, and Bird are all together at Teri's house, and Bird tells the secret about Teri having panic attacks, and Maxine doesn't know. My thing is when did Teri tell Bird about the panic attacks?"

The part where Bird finds out about the panic attacks is when she comes to Teri's and finds her on the floor. She was about to go to work but after she had the panic attack, she called in sick and had her asst to have her work delivered to her home. When Bird comes, she sees the box that the courier left at the door, then she walks in and sees Teri's purse on the floor. When she runs to the living room, she discovers Teri on the floor. You asked, "when did Teri tell Bird about the panic attacks?" Well, the scene I just described is how Bird finds out. So, if you say that scene is in there, then that would be the answer to your question. I guess we were misunderstanding each other. Irregardless, we do know there are parts that are cut out, which I'm not too happy about.

reply

what episode was it when bird found out about the attacks thats wierd?

reply

WHAT EPOSIDE WAS THAT WHEN ..when Maxine, Teri, and Bird are all together at Teri's house, and Bird tells the secret about Teri having panic attacks???

reply

"Come Back For The Comeback" is the episode where Bird reveals the secret about Teri having panic attacks.

I'm still confused because "Come Back For The Comeback" is before the episode "Help". How did Bird know about the panic attacks before. Because the episode "Help" is when she finds Terri lying on the floor and they sing together and stuff. I'm not understanding.

reply

The "help" episode is not the first time she started having panick attacks.. that why Bird knew.. I am happy that I got my dvd but I am pissed that i am hearing that its been edited alot. I got hooked on when the six season was out..So I am really hyped about getting all the seasons even though it may be edited..

reply

I know the "Help" episode is not the first time Teri has a panic attack. That's why I'm confused. But the show only has 5 seasons, not 6.

reply

Ok jsc8430, now you're gonna make me watch season 2 all over again to find out what you're talking about (you got me curious). You're right, if the episode 'Help' is after 'Comeback for the Comeback', it doesn't make any sense. I won't rest until I get this straight. I'm familiar with both episodes, but maybe I got a little confused on the order of things. Was it this way on Showtime (or, dare I say, BET)? If it was, maybe it was a flaw on their part. Unfortunately, the only way to know is to watch when they re-air on BET. And right now, BETJ is tripping, b/c last week, they showed the final episode, then they started this week with season 5 again (whereas they should've started over from day one). Nonetheless, we'll figure it out.

reply

Yes please do!! LOOL!

But the episodes are in order. I don't think they are showing them in order on BET or BETJ, but Season 2 is no order. Then get back at me.

reply

Well, I stand corrected. In the 'Help' episode, Bird already knows of the panic attacks. When she finds Teri on the floor, she asks, "Are you having another one of your panic attacks?" However, I watched the first 3 (I think) episodes from season 2 up to 'Comeback for the comeback', and did not see where Bird finds out about Teri's panic attacks. So, I guess I'll have to wait until BETJ decides to repeat season 2.

BTW, I finished watching disc 5 of the set and got to the last episode where Kristine kills herself. Every time I watched that episode on BET, I'd always think about the scenes they deleted when Damon talked to his father after the suicide and also when he goes to Kristine's parents house. When they took so long to release season 2, I wondered if I'd ever get to see those scenes again. BET deleted several scenes from that episode.

reply

Me too!!

I saw it on BET too and it was edited out.

But we need to find out about Teri telling Bird about the panic attacks. But I feel in my spirit that Bird and Teri must have had some talk about it. I won't rest either th3302!! LOOL!

reply

I was a little apprhensive about buying it because of teh editing issues I heard about, but if the stuff you guys are mentioning is the only problem then it seems a small price to pay for finally getting it so I will go ahead.

reply

YOUR RIGHT HOW DID BIRD DKNOW ABOUT THE PANIC ATTACKS BEFORE?

reply

I, too, am a little disappointed in the release of Season 2 on DVD. But the music scenes that featured guest artists (i.e. Kina, Blu Cantrell, etc.) have been removed or altered because in order for Season 2 to be released on DVD, the show had to be licensed for home distribution. In other words, the company may have not licensed the music. Same thing happened with the FELICITY and GIRLFRIENDS DVDs.

reply

I went to Target to buy some random DVDs and I was sooooo excited to see Soul Food Season 2 on the shelf (last copy). I haven't opened it, yet, but I'm already disappointed that it's been chopped up like ya'll said. What is the freakin' point?! I hate when shows that aired on Showtime or HBO (yea, I'm talking to you, Sex & the City producers) get chopped up and edited to the point of being unrecognizable on cable (and now DVD even). I bet they wouldn't do this to the Sopranos. Grr...Stupid Tracey Edmonds.

reply

Jara, yeah it's chopped up, but it's not half as bad as it is on BET. It's worth buying (it's only $30, not $80 like season 1 was when it was first released). It's mostly the music that's editted, but there are also other scenes here and there. For someone who hasn't seen it on Showtime, I don't think it'll be noticeable. But for us 'Soul Food' afficionados (who watched from day 1), it's a big deal, though not big enough to keep from buying it. We just know we're missing something (others can't miss what they've never had).

reply

I guess the question was whether to sell chopped up shows at $40 or full shows at $90. Shows like The Sopranos are shown in full, but those are some expensive DVD sets in the beginning.

itsthejointdotnet u bought the DVD's did they really chop away alot???

Because if they did minus well watch it on BET lol only advantage about the DVD is No commericals and u see nudity and hear profanity lol

I am really upset they did that, thats why I didnt buy it yet

reply

I didn't catch the series the first time around. (I was in college and had no cable.) But from what I can see, especially in the third season, some things are definitely cut. Guest actors in the credits don't show up, singers who are supposed to perform are never seen, and I've spotted a couple of continuity errors. I didn't notice it in the second season, but it's very obvious in the third. Oh, and there are ZERO special features - no cast interviews, no outtakes, no extended scenes...very bare bones.

Still, I'm buying the series because I want to support it with my dollars (and because I never saw seasons four and five), and I encourage other SF fans do the same. Showtime has a bit of a problem. The first series sold very poorly because it was so expensive, but was complete. The second series apparently did much better because it was half the cost, but it's obviously edited. Damned if they do, damned if they don't. I don't think we should withhold our dollars because of it - if SF fans were as dedicated as Sopranos fans, we'd have our show in its entirety. (And there's always a chance of them rereleasing the whole series in one package, a la Sex in the City.)

reply

The 3rd season DVD includes both 3rd and 4th season, so now all we need is season 5 to be released. Anyway, is the 3rd season DVD seriously cut THAT bad? If so, that's horrible. But I'm still getting them.

reply

So do u think there will ever be a day they release the COMPLETE season like they did in Season 1?

And when u say guest stars didnt show up, I am hoping its only the musicians. I hope they didnt edit the actors and actresses that guest starred like Terrence Howard, Kimberly Elise, Tichina Arnold, etc.

Is Sopranos chopped up?
why is Soul Food chopped?

reply

You sure about that? How many eps were in season three?

Season 3 had 10 episodes and so did 4.
Season 1-20
Season 2-20
Season 3-10
Season 4-10
Season 5-14

74 episodes.

reply

OMG, it can't be that bad! I haven't bought my copy yet. School, work and my son have been kicking my butt. I will definitely pick it up this weekend though. Season 2 had guest actors and musical guests that didn't show up in a couple of episodes as well (and their names were in the opening credits), but it wasn't too bad. I have to be honest...if having the COMPLETE series means a larger price, I'd be willing to pay a higher price (though I don't think that's the issue, but who knows). Oh, well...as I said, I'll be picking mine up this weekend.
