Original Cast not on show

Does anyone know why the original cast memebers from the movie weren't used for the tv series.

I personally liked Vivica Fox better as Maxine. Nicole Parker was a good replacement for Vanessa Williams as Teri. Nia Long and Malinda were both the same as Bird. The brother in laws with the exception of Miles character I thought should of stayed the same as well as Ahmad's.

They were years older once the show was being made and the show only took place a few months after the movie. Plus, I doubt all the movie stars would've said yes to starring in a TV drama.

do you think they could have paid the original cast the same money as all those mostly unknown actors at the time? No! the show was shot in Toronto, Canada for a reason, money!

so one reason for the new cast is that the movie cast would have cost a lot more considering the movie was already a success.

Ok they would have paid less money to original cast, but that money would have still been more than what they paid a groupe of mostly unknown actors, can you tell me who at the time knew who Boris Kodjoe was as an actor or Nicole Ari Parker or Rocman Dumbar?

The original cast would have asked much more money because of the success of the movie and because actresses like Fox and Williams were already known.

And anyway that change of cast did not preclude the show from being a success in ratings and quality, it launched careers for Dumbar, Kodjoe and Parker to say the least.

I don't regret that change, we would have missed the Kodjoe/Parker chemistry of season 1 and beyond!

It was a good call!

Many actors and actresses only prefer to do movies instead of tv. However, in this case, my guess is, they probably didn't think 'Soul Food' would do as well as it did because ALL of the stars eventually went to tv acting: (Mekhi Pfeifer on 'ER'; Nia Long was on 'Third Watch'; Vivica Fox was on 'City of Angels'; Vanessa L. Williams is on 'Ugly Betty', and Michael Beach does tv as well; Gina Ravera on 'The Closer'). I have no clue what happened to the kid who played Ahmad in the movie.

I read a Vivica Fox interview in Sister 2 Sister Magazine and she said none of them were available. She said Tracey Edmonds tried to get her out her show City of Angels but it didnt work out. Vivica also said that they turned Soul Food out to a nice sexy show and they are doing there thing

th3302 Nia Long, Mekhi Phifer and Vanessa Williams just recenly got on a TV show, maybe because they realized how succuessful they can be. I agree maybe at the time some of them thought that the Soul Food TV sereis wont be successful. Also if one original cast member says they cant do it, I think most likely they wont sign anyone else
