Casting Patricia Clarkson as Ruth's sister. I realized it back when the episodes first aired and watching it again just solidifies my opinion. The physcial attributes matched with both actresses characters just works so well

shareI felt the same about the casting of Patricia Clarkson as the younger, hipper sister of Ruth. Side by side, they could be sisters in real life. Even their wardrobe was spot on. Ruth was usually uptight and always dressed frumpy and practical, and her free spirit sister, Sarah, had a bohemian style. I noticed in Ruth's last scene that she adopted more of that bohemian look, as if after Nate's death, she was making changes in her life as her remaining children did.
