I'm in the middle of season one and...

(probably around episode 6 or so) and I am wondering whether the show's iconic status is build upon later seasons or what the hype is all about. I mean it's a cool show so far with a lot of cool ideas but I'm not as hyped as most folks. Is it going to change in any way during later seasons? Or is it nostalgia that brings people to state that this is on par with breaking bad and stuff?

No hate! I'm just not sure if I should continue watching or not right now. :)

Just keep watching it until the very end. It's a meaningful experience.

It's right up there with Breaking Bad...just keep watching. Way better than that stinky Wire show

Right up there with breaking bad? You mean, around #35 or so of the best television shows of the past 10 years? What a ringing endorsement...

The reason breaking bad is so popular is due to teenagers who only have access to cable television shows. It's a good show and I enjoyed it, but it's SOOOO slow... if done properly, an entire breaking bad season could be condensed in to a single 1-hour episode (of course, on cable you have to account for commercials though)...

I tried to watch all seasons a 2nd time, but like I said it's so slow, and once you've seen it , you remember everything that happened and you don't notice anything new, because each episode only has like 1 major scene that pertains to, or progresses the story. In contrast, something like Deadwood is so well thought-out, and there are so many storylines, sub-plots, etc, that one could watch it 50 times and still notice new details each time because of its complexity...

Shows like Lost, The Walking Dead, etc, are decent, but if you think breaking bad is deserving of its higher IMDB rating than game of thrones, the sopranos, the wire, etc, then you're quite simply insane. And like I said, this is only due to teenagers and young adults who have never seen the shows I just mentioned, and only watch the cable television shows that their schoolmates and teenage friends talk about

People who proclaim their opinions as fact are not worth paying attention to.

So then you're not going to provide a counter-argument, or explain why i'm wrong and you're right? People who just throw stones rather than explain their position are not worth paying attention to.... sound familiar?

reply

I didn't think more explanation was necessary, but here you go:

I didn't say you were "right" or "wrong"; you simply stated your opinion, which is fine, but your wording indicated (to me) that your views were "the facts".

I know it can seem redundant or silly to feel one always needs to type "IMO..." or "I think that..." but just saying it once in your post of five paragraphs, would have in my opinion helped you to seem less patronising (especially when saying someone is "quite simply insane"). Your attitude would have seemed less of a blanket condemnation of all the people who praise Breaking Bad or other series just because they're "...teenagers who only have access to cable television shows..." or "teenagers and young adults who have never seen the shows I just mentioned...".

There are percentage breakdowns in the categories of IMDb voters for each entry (male, female, under 16, over 45, etc) but those specifics of not having seen other certain shows or only having access cable tv shows are not provided.

I hope that's clear.

All the best,
derekbd

I'm sorry but there is no show better than The Wire. End thread.

I love sfu, but always got the feeling that I have To explain people that season 2 gets better.

I really dont like the Claire boyfriend storyline for example. And the tone changes slightly, too.

But if you dont like tage Ruth aand David storylines.. - they stay the same and offer some great character development!
You have to watch S3, it's great!

reply

The same happened to me. I mean, I was hooked at the beginning by some characters, but never could I love the show or see its greatness. Only when the first season ended I started to love it.

Second seasin though, is much better.

Actually it was in the middle of season one that I realized how special this show is. I love the way they balance the drama and the comedy. It takes a little while for you to start loving the characters. And the show is very unique.

The thing that gripped me from the beginning was the way the dead interacted with the living, sort of like a play. I've really never seen anything like it. I've re-watched The Wire and Breaking Bad a few times, but never this show. I think it's time, 10 years later.

It's definitely in my "Top 10" shows of all times. I'm about the watch the series finale as soon as I get it from Netflix. The show does get a lot darker in Season 5, but there are some beautiful episodes, and the characters grow and change a lot throughout the series. There are times when I dislike certain characters, and then they acquire new dimensions, and I begin to root for them again.

Stick with it.

I'd say that if you're not addicted by now you probably never will be.
