Is it just me or...(smile)
did Richard not "smile" at Ruth in the store (that she remarked on to Dr. Fowler?) To me he gave the look of his hand caught in the cookie jar...

shareI didn't notice the smile in the store, but I did notice the smile when he is at the car near the woods and Matt's friend takes his bags. I definitely thought that was odd. Was he smiling because he thought he was going to get away or was he going to do something? That's when Matt suddenly shoots him, but I didn't think Matt could see the smile. Maybe he could and that's why he shoots him. That would have been enough for me, that's for sure, lol.
shareI saw a lack of a smile in the store...
As for the smile in the woods... I think Richard smiled as Willis (friend) was getting the bags because he felt safe. Richard called him "Mr Grinnel" so he obviously knew him, and Grinnel called him "son." It was just a false sense of security on Richard's part...
^^^I agree with this.
shareI'm watching the movie now for perhaps the tenth time and Richard on no way smiles at Ruth when they meet in the store. If anything, he looks very uncomfortable and gets out of there as soon as he can. NOT that I blame Ruth for her warped perception of the meeting--she was crazed with grief.
