I agree with Ruth with regarding Matt.

He did fantasize about Natalie and was living through his son. I mean even before she said it I notice him gazing at her hell I thought they were going to have some kind of affair.

It was vicarious, however I think Matt was too pragmatic to ever think he could entertain any kind of fantasy relationship, or otherwise, with Natalie.

I don't think Ruth was correct - but she was angry, and thats what husbands and wives do when the pain is so great...they tend to lash out at each other and say the most hurtful things you can think of...

They were both guilty of keeping to themselves too much in their marriage, and this tragedy exposed how little they communicated with each other.

Do you agree with Matt about Ruth? I think they were both deadly accurate in their judgments of each other and each of them knew it. Both made mistakes, neither was really to blame.

The little girl selling gymnastics candy was perfect too. A really stunning scene all around.

Did Ruth actually accuse Matt of being attracted to Natalie??? Wow, I was watching this film closely, but I guess I entirely missed that part. . ..

reply

It may not be "attraction" per se but he made a sexual innuendo about Frank having sex with Natalie...(when he was in bed with Ruth). This goes along with Ruth yelling at Dr. Fowler, "You were winking at him the whole time."

reply

And while Matt and Ruth were having that terrible argument, Ruth shouted something about Frank dying for Matt's "fantasy piece of a$$". I don't know if she really meant that though, it was an extremely harsh thing to say. She was lashing out because she was so upset and angry about Frank's killer being freed on bail and resuming his life as though nothing had happened.

Well, it's not so much that Matt was attracted to Natalie himself, just that he saw, in Frank, himself reborn. So, the fantasy in "fantasy lay" isn't Matt fantasizing about himself laying Natalie, but Matt fantasizing about being Frank laying Natlie.

Or, maybe I'm just drunk.
