Fades to black

Does anyone else find the fades to black brilliant? Matt and Ruth have been through an imaginable tragedy, and have to do the even more unimaginable: go on. During those first several day they’re more or less zombies, resuming their day-to-day lives, which now move much more slowly. I’m not a parent and therefore have never lost a child, but watching the lead performances during these scenes gives me a sense of how wrenching it is.

I agree, I like those scenes and you do get a sense that their lives have a lot less meaning now. They are just going through the motions, knowing that the promising future their son had and any hope of grandchildren someday is gone forever.

In the scene where Matt, Ruth and their friends are sitting at a table at the friends' cabin, you get to see Ruth noticing how much wine her husband is drinking. Also, Ruth starts smoking after the shooting, something you never see her do before, so they seem to be picking up habits to cope with their pain.

Totally agree OldFriend, this movie is devastating to watch yet I cannot stop. Upon every re-viewing I forget how much it sticks with you afterward. Every scene has meaning even if you don't get it initially. It's haunting.
