I Liked the Ending

This was no Liam Neeson revenge thriller. And as such, there is not the usual predictable ending after a bad guy has been dealt with. No wise crack retort before someone is blown away, and the good guys riding a motorcycle off into the sunset.

This felt REAL. You can tell Matt will not be sleeping for quite a while. He's already possibly regretting what he's done, or at the very least, wondering about getting caught. Will there be forensic evidence, eyewitnesses, surveillance cameras? Will it all unravel next month? Maybe in 5 years or a decade? He just added a huge amount of baggage to be carrying around for the rest of his life, and you can see it all on his face.

Funny that you say "love the ending", since while I liked the ending too, to me it was the weakest part of the film. I'm not talking about the last scene particularly, but in general the final sequence of the film that depicts Matt's revenge. Before that point in the film, I was riveted by all of the characters, but the ending sequence felt just a little too much like a "Liam Neeson revenge thriller." Don't get me wrong - it was great, and no other revenge thriller would be that good. But for me it took me a bit "out" of the movie, which I thought was basically perfect up until that point.

You make good points. I suppose the movie would've been ok without the killing. But it still felt realistic to me. I'm always surprised that more murderers don't get gunned down by the family members of their victims. It would be hard to stop me if my son or daughter were killed. And that's why I appreciated the ending. It shows that getting rid of a person is not the end of the story. The person my be gone, but everything still lingers. Guilty conscious, getting caught, etc.

Not sure if he felt it had to be done. Rather, his wife did & he did it for her.

I disagree with you, Stirchley. I don't think Matt did it for his wife. You can see he is becoming obsessed with Richard when he's laying in bed looking up at the ceiling (you just know he's think of Richard) and then you see Matt sitting in his car outside Richard's house. Matt did not know how Ruth felt until after he was staulking Richard. Just my thoughts on it. Great movie all around.

Very well put. I was thinking all of these thing's while watching that scene and you summed it up succinctly. Every time I watch this film I find it sticking with me long after and evoking so many of the emotions you see the various characters displaying.

It's quite haunting and brilliant in that way.
