The movie didn't make enough money, even after DVD sales, to be able to afford a two-word title, so they had to knock it down to one word.

Well ok, did you try typing in the Shaft. You only got movies about the Character Shaft, not this movie. The title of the film is still called The Shaft, but it has an a.k.a title so that people can find it easier. On Sci-Fi it's still called the Shaft

Who changed the title? Why?
& if they felt they had 2 change the title,y not change it to "Elevator" or "Next Stop Hell"?
Down is a terrible title!
The tv guide says "The Shaft". That title is better (Tho I thought I as gonna be watching the Roundtree/Jackson movie ).

Hey, guys. I'm know I'm really late in answering but just to let people know. Dick Maas, the guy who wrote and directed this film, made the film as "Down" and that is the film's title. "The Shaft" was what the dumb home video distributor called it. It's obvious they retitled it to cash in on the success of the "The Ring" complete with Naomi Watts screaming on a telephone on the cover! Omigod, these jag-offs are so shameless nowadays.

It should be rereleased as "Dick Maas' Shaft." It won't make this film any better, but it will improve sales.
shareDown was produced in 2000, and released in theaters overseas in mid 2001.
Two years later—possibly delayed because of the terrorism angle—it was released in America on DVD as The Shaft.
When it airs on television in America it uses the American DVD title, but that does not change the fact that its primary title is Down.
