That's because halfway through Season 2 David E Kelley had stopped writing the episodes. That's a pattern with his shows. Picket Fences took a serious nose-dive in the quality of writing after Season 3, Chicago Hope was good for a bit after he stopped writing in Season 2, then really went downhill for the rest of the series (though it was still very entertaining and watchable). L.A. Law really went downhill after the 1992 season when DEK left to do his own show (Picket Fences).
Harry Hamlin left L.A. Law; Peter MacNicol and Mandy Patinkin left Chicago Hope when DEK made it clear that he wouldn't be handling the writing and most of the supervision of the shows. I'm sure at least Nicky Katt decided to leave when DEK stopped writing, and I'm sure Jessalyn was the same way.
