Did anyone start off feeling sympathy towards Jim Cunningham (SPOILERS)?

When Donnie set Cunningham's house on fire did anyone start off feeling sympathy towards Cunningham? I did but when I've found out he was a child molester who had kiddie porn all the sympathy I've had for him went out the window.

I should have realized then there was something not right about Jim Cunningham.

I think that was the point of the scene, as in predators are always lurking waiting for a way in; but once everything is said and done, everyone is like "Wow, we had no idea", "I would never have thought he/she would do such a thing", "He/She seemed like a good person"...
