Did the neighbours know people were hiding there?

After seeing photos of the secret annexe, I realised that the building is attached to other buildings either side and round the back is a whole square of houses. It seems possible that the people living next door must have heard something, especially as they had the radio on most evenings.

I think I remember reading somewhere that people did have their suspicions about people living in the building, but does anyone know for sure?

no, the people next door did not know. in fact, it wasn't until after the arrest that they were aware of the people in the building.

I remember hearing people say they had suspicions, but that it wasn't something to talk about.

People were suspicious, but nobody ever found out on 8-4-44 like you said.
