The adaptation, starring young actress Ellie Kendrick in the title role, will be screened over five consecutive nights on BBC One early next year.
The BBC said the drama, which shows the Frank family hiding from the Nazis during World War II, would "bring Anne alive to viewers of all generations".
Executive producer John Smithson said it was a "portrayal of a family living through the most horrifying times".
He added: "We want audiences to identify with all the characters in the story - particularly Anne who, as a bright, funny, energetic teenager, still seems entirely modern today."
The drama will also star Iain Glen and The Green Wing actress Tamsin Greig as her parents, Otto and Edith.
Anne began writing the diary on her 13th birthday in June 1942, two weeks before she and her family were forced into hiding in Nazi-occupied Holland.
They spent two years living in a secret annexe of her father's office building in Amsterdam before they were discovered.
Anne died from typhus in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in March 1945. Her diary was published by her father after her death.
WTH is BBC? Will we be able to see this in the US?
I don't want to I don't have to You can't make me Cause I'm Special
I'm a bit nervous about this to be honest. We have very little information about this other than who is going to play the Frank family. It says it is going to be based on 'The Diary of Anne Frank' and so if this means it is going to be based on the pubished diary, rather than actual accounts of the period and biographies, I'm a bit concerned that is isn't going to be all that factual and will be more like the 1959 film and the play, which use the psudonyms for Mr and Mrs van Pels, Mr Pfeffer and Miep, Jan, Bep, Mr Kugler and Mr Kleiman. I'm not sure about Iain Glen playing Otto, from the pictures I have seen, there isn't much of a likeness there, compared to say Ben Kingsley or the man who played Otto in the Hollywood film. Tamsin Grieg however does look more like Edith I think, but only slightly, than Tatiana Blancher does. I think Felicity Jones, who is going to be playing Margot is far too pretty for the part (I'm not saying Margot was ugly though ;) ). Maybe make up and costume will make her look more like Margot. I've only seen one picture of Ellie Kendrick who is going to play Anne, and that was from a side view. From it she does remind me of Hannah Taylor Gordon in a way, so hopefully she will look more like Anne than Millie Perkins did at least. As its in 5 parts (apparently) I hope they are going to explore more of Anne's life than her time in hiding, but because it says it will be based on the diary, I doubt it.
By the way, the BBC is one of the 3 main TV channels and the first one set up in the UK. For some reason, even though you're from the USA and have a completely different set of TV channels, I thought people in the USA at least would have heard of the BBC! No offence but I thought you would have known what the BBC was seen as the link you gave came from its website!
Apparently, this is the main cast list for the Anne Frank drama, and to be honest, after seeing this, I don't have high expectations :(
Ellie Kendrick: Anne Frank Iain Glen: Otto Frank Tamsin Greig: Edith Frank Felicity Jones: Margot Frank Nicholas Farrell: Mr Dussel Kate Ashfield: Miep Gies Ron Cook :Mr Van Daan Lesley Sharp: Mrs Van Daan Unknown: Peter Van Daan
I'm disapointed that they are using the psudonyms for the people in hiding rather than their actual names, which is strange, because they are more well known now and their actual names are printed in biographies and most books about Anne Frank. Also, I don't really rate many of the actors, especially Kate Ashfield, who I've seen in 'Secret Smile' (a 2 part ITV drama with David Tennant) and 'Shaun of the Dead' (with Simon Pegg). I just can't imagine her being able to play someone like Miep Gies, she looks nothing like her eaither!
they only casted three people well, and that was Tamsin Greig as Edith, Felicity Jones as Margot, and Unknown as Peter XD. but i SO wanna see it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! when is it set to air?! and what is it called?!
i never said i was perfect - at least i never said it more than 1000 time (THATS MY QUOTE NO COPY)
