Miep Gies...

Does anyone think Miep might have been part Jewish, but disguised it? I had that funny feeling; she seemed so familiar with Jewish customs. I know many Jewish people in Europe hid their Jewish heritage whenever they could if they didn't escape the Nazis. I wondered if anyone knows if Miep was one of those figuratively, but not literally "hidden" Jews.

Miep Gies currently lives in the Dutch province of Noord-Holland. According to Carol Ann Lee's biography of Otto Frank, The Hidden Life of Otto Frank, Mrs. Gies no longer grants interviews after enduring a bout of severe ill health.

'I stand at the end of the long, long line of good Dutch people who did what I did or more – much more - during those dark and terrible times years ago, but always like yesterday in the hearts of those of us who bear witness. Never a day goes by that I do not think of what happened then.', Miep Gies states on her own recently published website.

On 15 February 2009 Miep Gies celebrated her 100th birthday. According to her son, Gies is in good health and follows the news on a daily basis.

No, she was not a hidden Jew...she was just a person who did the right thing in a horrible period of history.

Thanks...I've read that there were many Dutch, German, and other Jews who disguised themselves as Gentiles whenever they could. Poor Miep must have gone thru a horrible emotional ordeal after most of the Franks and the Van Pels died. It's swell that Miep was able to live that long...swell lady.

Thanks for the website also.

I don't see how or why Miep would do this especially after the war.

As for her knowing Jewish customs there were 100,000 Jews living in Amsterdam at the time. Her boss was Jewish. Many of her close friends were Jewish. She risked her life hiding two Jewish families. You would think she would know a little.

I suspect Miep knows a LOT about Jewish customs...I still think she has a bit of Jewish blood in her herself anyway.
