In the recent BBC Drama it kind of comes across that way and in interviews he hardly talked about poor Margot. I've always wondered about Margot and what she would have done if she had lived, if she had become the nurse she wanetd to be.
shareOtto did himself say that Margot went to Edith, and that Anne went to him. It's a bit of a natural aspect Of family life sometimes. But Otto did say, as Carol Ann Lee stated in her book, to relatives after the war that he would remember the look in Margot's eyes as they were separated for the rest of his life. So it's not he didn't love Margot just as much, just how the family dynamics worked out.
shareI wouldn't go so far as to say he "favorited" Anne but he did have a stronger relationship with her than he did Margot. Margot simply had more of a bond with her mother. I have a feeling that had Edith lived insted of Otto than Margot would be the famous one. Providing they had Margots diary of course.
shareI think Edith would have published both Anne and Margot's diary if Margot had kept one. Although Edith and Anne had their skirmishes, Edith did love both of her daughters equally well. I suspect Margot did not keep a diary; otherwise Otto would have published it as well. Otto and Meip did their best to keep both of his daughters' memories alive...Anne thru her diary and Margo thru other means.

Can't say that Otto loved Margot less but he clearly was more attached to Anne.
As for Margot's diary it one of the most mysterious unreleased pieces of writing of all time. As she was more mature and intelligent than her sister it could have easily been better.
I think a parent having a favorite child is natural, but the only problem I had was that it was clear which child Otto favored. I wish parents would try harder to hide it. But I agree Otto had more of an attachment to Anne and Edith had more of an attachement to Margot. I dont think if Edith had lived Margot would be more famous, Anne is the famous sister because her diary was found. Margot's never was. Plus Edith might have mourned and come to peace with her loss in a different way than Otto did.

I don't think either sister was "more intelligent" than the other, but because Margo was older, she did seem more mature.
shareI always assumed that Otto didn't talk so much about Margot -- and Edith -- out of grief. Reportedly, he could hardly mention Anne without crying. But he had to because of the diary (and the play, and the film, and...) Perhaps if it had been Margot's diary that had been saved and Anne's were lost instead, things would be different? It's strange how history turns out.

It's quite possible that Margot hid her diary in a place where it couldn't be found, like maybe in a loose floorboard, or underneath the mattress of her bed. If it was under the mattress, and the furniture and everything was removed from the attic, then the diary would've been lost. :(
