Finally I read The book and it was great such a good novel!! Then I watched this movie it was "Ehh" not good as the book and not bad! As we know there're lots of changes. But I don't know if anyone noticed that! So it just me or Dagmara Dominczyk acting as Mercedès was horrible! No Really horrible!! Her acting was so cold when she talk and cry there's nothing about her moved me at all! So what you think? Just my opinion :P
Yeah, there are MANY differences between the film & the book, I believe much of it had to do with having a happy, upbeat ending for the film.. But IMO both are very good independent of one another.
I think she played the role brilliantly and I'll explain why..
As the young Mercedes she is upbeat, happy, full of smiles & life.. She has a bright future with the man she loves..
Then comes Edmond's Death (so she believes) and now her life has veered off into a sad, dismal, no hope direction. She has her son and that brings her at least some happiness (you see that in her eyes as she talks of him) but the rest of her life just plain SUCKS!
In addition, a lady of that time and she was a "lady" in the proper sense, wouldn't show a whole lot of emotion even IF she were happy & content in her life and certainly wouldn't show any disrespect, anger, disgust etc.. to her husband. Even if she knew he was a cheating creep- a lady of that time would've just looked the other way, 'suffered in silence.' Things were all buried beneath the surface & it would be unladylike to display emotion in "mixed company." Notice the few times she's alone with Fernand, her anger and disgust is quite evident. You can tell the way she looks at him & how she speaks to him, she hates him and he deserves it.
She's in a loveless marriage, has been for over a decade, he husband cheats on her and she basically has nothing. She acts like a miserable, BROKEN woman that's lost it all, IMO she conveyed that quite well.
Later, after she learns Edmond is still alive, she perks up again. She's positively giddy when Jacapo is helping her dress to go "gather her things to leave the country with her son & Edmond." Heck he's caught off guard as she is so anxious she jumps outta the bed naked. LOL
Skip ahead to the confrontation of Edmond, Fernand and Albert and she shows proper terror, guilt, sadness, all the emotions she would be feeling..
Anyway, those are the reasons I believe she did a fine job in her role. It's just my opinion though and you're entitled to yours even if it differs from mine..
People in life that are the happiest don't have the most, they make the most of what they have...
I agree. I thought her acting was excellent in this film. It was a very serene performance, but with her emotions always visible just underneath the exterior. She was one of the best things in this movie, in my opinion, and it's a movie that I love unreservedly.
I agree with the OP 100%. I have always thought her acting was terrible in this and I got on imdb tonight just to see if others had posted about it! It all but ruins the film, despite the quality of the other excellent actors and production. She is extremely self-conscious and I find it impossible to forget that she is ACTing, which, of course, totally takes me out of the film. It's very distracting. I think she was cast solely because of her looks, as is, regrettably, so often the case.
I absolutely agree,I was surprised to see such bad acting in a major film. I am really surprised to see so much praise to the wooden amateurish acting of hers! I am almost about to think that the commentators are professional PR people ;)
How odd. I thought she gave one of the most interesting and touching portrayals of a woman of that time I've seen. I'd never seen her before I saw this movie in the theater when it opened and thought she was amazing. Her scene in the carriage when she finally confronts Edmond, was stunning.
