KINDA FUN

I saw the movie and I have to say I thought it was a lot of fun. Don’t get me wrong. It’s no Shanghai Noon, but it’s not as bad as some of the people who haven’t even seen it are saying. Yeah, it’s goofy. Yeah, it’s comic booky. But I have to admit I was smirking throughout the movie and that’s something I haven’t pleasantly experienced in a long time.

Perhaps, unintentionally, there is a certain charm between Fat and Williams. I originally thought the casting was way off (maybe a Heath Ledger or Matt Damon at the very least) but it’s such an odd pairing that it somehow works. The movie is a bit rough in some spots, has that ambiguous big city look that Toronto can exude and it lacks the polished look of the highly compared to (at least at these boards) Matrix, but has a very subtle, kind of whimsical, off beat undercurrent that few movies can claim. Make no mistake about it—this movie doesn’t take itself seriously and that’s part of its draw: from its Batman-like villain to its slow-mo fight scenes to its cheesy romance.

If anyone’s expecting it to be anything remotely like The matrix—forget it. It wasn’t meant to be anything like it. This isn’t going to be Chow Yun-Fat’s great American movie. It’s more like "Dude, Where’s My Karma" and you know what? It kinda works.
