Is it just me, or the whole part where the dog is under the floor and they keep hearing him, looking for him, was very creepy?

This movie is not at all a suspense or anything but those scenes were very unsettling for some reason...

I thought it was really stupid because a). Why on earth were the holes never covered before the dog fell in and after they took him out and b). Dogs aren't that stupid, I reckon a dog would have gotten to the point he fell in after a couple of minutes.
