'El Chivo's' look inspired by a painting.
I've seen "Amores Perros" on TV(movie channels such as IFC, Encore, etc.)many times and I own a copy of the movie on DVD as well. But there is something I discovered about "El Chivo"(basically his appearance). That discovery about El Chivo's appearance, I believe, is that it was inspired by a painting called "Man Seated on a Trash Heap" by Mexican artist Francisco Goitia(1882-1960). The painting was painted around 1926 and 1927 and it consists of an old man sitting down on a mound in a landfill and he's holding a walking stick in his left hand. His appearance is that he has unkempt hair and a long white beard. And although this particular painting was done over 70 years before "Amores Perros" was released, you would think it was "El Chivo" who was played by actor Emilio Echevarria in that painting. The only source that I'm aware of that has this painting displayed is a book called, "Mexico: Splendors of Thirty Centuries" which was made by the Metropolitan Museum of Art: New York and the book was released in 1991(I saw the art exhibit twice at the L.A. Museum of art in that particular year as well). I'm not sure about any other sources that have this painting, but if anybody looks up the artist Francisco Goitia and happens to find this particular painting, the resemblance of both the man who was the subject of this painting and "El Chivo"(Emilio Echevarria) will present itself and will be a shock to see as well.
