Oddly enough, I couldn't find a DVD with the alternate ending either, but apparently Fox Movie Channel did, because they showed it as part of their "beyond the DVD" movie feature one night (I can't actually remember what the feature is called). So I've seen the alternate ending and couldn't be happier that Tony Goldwyn campaigned to change it and won.
In the originally filmed ending, Jane finds Eddie sitting at a small table on a roof, presumably the roof of their building. She walks over to him, says something contrite and confessional, but not the same dialogue as in the other ending, which Eddie responds to by shoving the table aside and knocking it over, striding across the roof and planting a major kiss on her. Again, some dialogue that I didn't quite catch follows the kiss and then it starts to rain, hard. They kiss some more. FADE OUT.
I can't be 100% sure, but I don't think the Van Morrison song, "Someone Like You" is in the original ending. I think I remember Goldwyn saying on the director commentary that it was a U2 song.
Having seen both endings, I can assure you that the one where he gets out of the taxi is MUCH BETTER than the original. It fits the tone of the film more accurately and leaves a much "sweeter" taste in your mouth.
As for deleted scenes, again Goldwyn comments on some in the voice over he does, but the scenes are not on the DVD I purchased. One in particular he mentions is a lenghthy conversation between Jane and Ray that takes place on their "first date" where you see them walking along the water with the bridges lit up behind them. He said it was great dialogue, but when they looked at the movie as a whole, they realized it slowed the pace too much and it had to go, leaving only the long shot of the two of them walking. He also said there was a hilarious bit with Liz (Marisa Tomei) telling Jane the story of her blind date, but again, it was too long and didn't serve the story enough to warrant being left in.
Hope this helps.
