Terrible Romantic Comedy

I saw this when it first came out and while I didn't think it was good then I thought it was OK. I've since had my brain tumor removed and saw it again and thought it was pretty bad. What was Eddie's big dark secret with Becca? Did we ever learn? No. Was Ashley so stupid that she couldn't figure out that D stood for Diane (Ellen Barkin). She never managed to think that Dee meant the letter D? Pretty convoluted just to keep the story going til we find out it's Barkin (surprise, surprise). Ashley becomes this big media celebrity from an article in a crummy magazine? When was the last time that happened? 1950? And no one could check her out to see if she was legit in this day and age? Right. Oh and when did Ashley and Jackman fall in love? Did I miss that somewhere? When he held her all night? When she saw what a good guy her brother-in-law was? That all men aren't man whores? I doubt that. Like Eddie's going to stop sleeping around? Why? Plus what guy with vision would give up Ashley for Barkin anyway? She looks like she went a couple of rounds with Tyson. And now the greatest improbability-who would give up their rent controlled loft in Manhattan to their EX-boyfriend? And Liz has no character arc in the film either. She's the same ditzy friend in the beginning, the middle and the end.

I think I may be beginning to disappear. Away From Her

My WTF?!! moment was when Aleysha's character prances around in her skimpy underwear in front of Eddie. Uhhhh...the roommate line definitely got crossed there. Did anyone else also think that was an inappropriate moment?

reply

Inappropriate? That was the only memorable scene in the WHOLE movie!

reply

LOL Okay, I hate to admit it, but you're right. : ) It was a bad scene, but yes, I won't deny that it was memorable! LOL

"What was Eddie's big dark secret with Becca? Did we ever learn?"

I think it was implied that he had fallen hard, been dumped, and then resigned himself to empty, sexual relationships. It was shown (sort of) when he ran into her at the Yoga place, because she turned out to be totally different than the easy, casual girls he was obviously seeing. She was this innocent-looking, doe-eyed Yoga enthusiant, like the opposite of all the other girls, so he must have been a different person then, to fall for her. Like Jane said, "She really did a number on you."

"Was Ashley so stupid that she couldn't figure out that D stood for Diane (Ellen Barkin). She never managed to think that Dee meant the letter D?"

I never got that, either. I was totally surprised. I think a lot of viewers were !

" Ashley becomes this big media celebrity from an article in a crummy magazine?"

Yeah, that happened a little too quickly, when Oprah READ IT on her show the very next day?? Come on... It wasn't that impressive...

"Oh and when did Ashley and Jackman fall in love?"

Yeah, that bugged me, too. They should have had a lot more scenes together. It felt very rushed and insubstantial... and WHY? Her scenes with Eddie were the best in the whole movie. People would *want* to see more of that anyway! I think they should have had a funny scene in the apartment watching TV together. That is what roommates always end up doing, and often how they become friends. That was a missed opportunity.

"Like Eddie's going to stop sleeping around?"

I liked how he said, "what do we have to lose?"... Like, It's worth a try. Not necessarily that it would work out or be a long-term thing. That was more realistic than most romantic comedies are in the end.

"Why? Plus what guy with vision would give up Ashley for Barkin anyway? She looks like she went a couple of rounds with Tyson."

I think she should have had a nose job back in the 80s.
Moreover, the character of Diane was SO annoying ! Pretentious. What would anyone see in her?

" And Liz has no character arc in the film either. She's the same ditzy friend in the beginning, the middle and the end"

I hated her character, and Marisa Tomei's acting. Just UGH ! all the way through !!

reply

Yeah, and nobody brings up the possibility that in all likelihood she dumped him because he had no empathy for others.

reply

I totally agree... There is a lot of mistakes in this film and the most important is that we can't understand why and when Eddie fall in love of her.
But what is the most surprising for me is the cry scene in the bedroom. Did you noticed how much Eddie seems to be absolutly not attracted to her ? There is no chemistry between them !
