just a thought about jane (and ray)..

well, i've just seen this movie about an hour ago, and i kinda liked it but i have a question in my mind.. correct me if i am wrong, 'cause i watched the beginning of the movie a bit vaguely, but, didn't jane know about "dee" all along her relationship with ray, since the beginning? i do not recall ray breaking up with "dee" for good, up until they decide to move together, find the apartment... etc? and then she says all those things about ray???? i just can't get it..

i mean, it is already a relationship which is not based on some firm grounds. i am a woman too, and i would not jump into that relationship, however bad the guy's relationship may be going on, until i hear him saying 'ok i DID broke up with her for sure".. yes in the end she also admits that she has talked about these things 'cause she was angry and heartbroken and all but i think i did not hear her saying "i was also wrong and another woman's heart could have been broken thanks to also me"... i don't know if i could make myself clear but i just feel pissed as a woman seeing those "other women"; i may say that this is from the perspective of a truly emotional diane..

and i know that this is a romantic comedy and it aims mostly to entertain etc but no, i can not help but feel so!!

you're right. Jane knew Ray had a girlfriend ("Dee"), yet Jane still chose to date Ray. That is stupid on Jane's part. They are also both hurting Dee.

Ray told Jane he was having problems with Dee and it was complicated (since Dee was his boss-that could make it complicated!). But Ray still dated both Jane and Dee at the same time.

So both Ray and Jane are at fault: Ray cheated on Dee and Jane knew about Dee but still dated Ray.

Ha! Funny that you picked this up too. I picked this up because I've just had my boyfriend cheat on me.. and when I watched the movie again, I immediately lost respect for Jane.. I had never noticed until now, that she was the OTHER WOMAN.. and that was simply OK with her.. she could justify that in her mind.

I, like you, could never date a guy knowing there was another woman in the picture. It's slutty. Gross.. so he can be sleeping with 2 people at the same time? No way. I recently found out my boyfriend had been cheating on ME and I ended it.. but he was with a girl who knew me very well and knew about me in his life for years. Whore and white trash in my opinion.

sorry to hear about the situation with your (now ex) boyfriend. you're better off without him!

i bet that girl that he is with now will soon be the other woman as well, because your ex will probably cheat on her too.

I agree totally with you and that really bothered me as well. It made me dislike her also because she would just have a serious relationship with a guy who is in another relationship.

She is so blah blah blah about women's feelings when men leave them, did she ever stop to consider that she was hurting another woman? Apparently not...

I've heard it both ways

But he DID break up w/ Diane. He talked about it and how calm she was. He said that puzzled him, but I thought his ego was bruised because she didn't seem too upset.

Much later in the movie, Diane confides in Jane, "MY boyfriend tried to dump me. no he DID dump me. I got 2 corned-beef sandwiches, went to his place and told him I just was no good without him."

ray and jane were already cheating when ray told his girlfriend he wanted to break up.

Yep, just one of many things about this script that don't work.
Another is that by now everyone knows to avoid sleeping with people where you work, especially if you have a good job, but here nobody even gives the briefest thought to that sort of objection.
Things like this keep piling on until by the end we have a false happy ending because we have no idea whether or not tomorrow that guy is going to dump her for someone else just as he has dozens of times before.
