I almost couldn't believe how bad it was.
The cinematography is nice. Sets are spot on. Costumes splendid. Everything you see is wonderful.
But the acting, dialogue, dubbing, and almost everything else is embarrasing.
I absolutely agree! It seemed so weird, so unlike any Chinese film I have watched so far. I erased it from our HDD asap.

Actually, the cinematography wasn't that great, either. There was no emotion in the acting.
I thought the worst scenes were
1)Shots of the kids being "scared". It was so bad. I mean, I know kids aren't really suppose to be actors, but they could've gotten better shots. Instead, I get these emotionless faces staring back.
2)When he confronts her about being cold and finding replacements, etc. She had such a bad crying scene. There were NO TEARS.
3)The last scene. "Your name shall be Love." Ahem... right.

worst film ever.... and those kids didn't age in 3 years???? lol horrible... i only watched it to see John Cho... but could not turn away from the trainwreck...
shareI just read the book for the first time. After reading comments here, I can't imagine wasting my time on the movie. For those who haven't read the book, I highly recommend it. It's wonderful.

There is no physical romance between Madame Wu and the Priest. She only realizes she loves him after he is dead, and he doesn't die the same way either.
This is all very interesting. I watched the first 3 minutes and decided I didn't need to continue (although I virtually never give up on films). Seems I probably made the right decision.
