Why did Malcolm think he could defuse an alien bomb?

When that Romulan mine attached itself to Enterprise Malcolm said he was the only one with the training to defuse it but it wasn't any weapon humans had seen before so why did he think it would be something he had experience with?

They'd never heard of the Romulans before that point.

Also, when that limb attached itself the hull and it shot thru his leg wouldn't that have compromised his suit and all his oxygen would have leaked out and he'd have suffocated or the pressure of being out in space would have crushed him? Or does Enterprise work under completely different laws of physics than we do in the 21st century?

As to the first, it was ridiculous. As to the second the suit would have a self sealing compound that would seal and breach this maintaining suit integrity

I'm not exactly sure Reed thought he could diffuse the mine, just that he was the most qualified to even attempt it.

We might imagine that their space suits had better technology than ours. Also, there is no pressure in space. Other than that, the MST3k theme song sums it up nicely:

If you're wondering how he eats and breathes
and other science facts (la la la),
Just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show,
I should really just relax

Malcome confessed he was making a best guess at disarming using familiar technology. No mystery. Any bomb expert uses what seems to him as the best disarming approach recognizing that all explosive devices have commonalities. He made a best guess which you will recall didn't work.

He actually says something like that to Archer about that the mine has some similarities with something he has trained on when they are out there disarming the mine.
