It _is_ awesome (I'm doing the Criterion Is Awesome dance whilst I type this, so forgive any type-O's), but... do I need to upgrade from my Fox/Lorber edition for this $40.00 one? I find the Fox/Lorber transfer an uncharacteristically fine one, with a great commentary track by Edward Yang; the only caveat would be the burned in subs, but since I don't speak Taiwanese, it's unlikely I'd watch the film without them anyway. So I ask you, my sister and brother geeks: would you shell out the moolah for an upgrade?

Now if Criterion comes out with a box set of Yi Yi, A Brighter Summer Day and A Confucian Confusion, THAT would be -- watch me dance! AWESOME!

Well, duh, it's Criterion my friend. It may not be way better or anything, but you can't say the Criterion spine isn't more good lookin' than some Fox Lorber one.. So, I say do it!

The Slant magazine review (http://slantmagazine.com/dvd/dvd_review.asp?ID=959) gives the impression that the original commentary by Edward Yang on the Fox/Lorber edition isn't licensed for the Criterion one; instead, there's a new one by Tony Raynes interviewing Yang? How does this new one compare? I love the original commentary to bits.

Also, that DVDBeaver link shows that my Fox/Lorber DVD has a ~7-9MB bitrate as opposed to Criterion's ~4-6MB! Izzat true?

*edit* Looking at the screenshots at DVDBeaver, I realise I now have to prostitute myself again to get the $40.00 to buy the Criterion DVD. Sigh. Okay, out on the streets I go.

I haven't heard the Fox/lorber edition commentary but the Criterion one is very disappointing. It lulled me to sleep it was so boring. Tony Raynes should stick to working on subtitles.

I'm really glad that Criterion took up Yi Yi. I'll still keep my Fox Lorber dvd (Yang's commentary track on it is awesome), but I'm definitely picking up this Criterion release. It's almost bittersweet, but this movie is worth it.

The only problem I had with the Fox Lorber dvd was that the quality supposedly suffered on its transfer. The movie was still fine to watch, but I kept on hearing about how superior the Korean release was. Actually, I hear a lot about how bad or at least rushed the Fox Lorber transfer really was (brightened up too much, right side of frame was cropped, etc...).

Anyhow, Criterion has given us their take on it and I hope that in terms of Audio and Video, it's the best presentation of the film on dvd. I think I'll pick it up today :)

I recently picked it up myself, and I think the transfer is really good. It's a bit dark, but it works. The film is awesome though, and the booklet is a very nice read.

The Fox Lorber DVD has better subtitles, but the Criterion DVD has better picture quality. The latter, inexplicably, uses British spelling and usage. Peace.
