A brilliant example of a perfect film.

Okay, so that one particular storyline wasn't as involving as the rest, but it doesn't at all change the fact that this is perhaps one of the most profound, transcendent film ever created.

Wich story line was that? I agree. This film is one of the best films I've ever watched. A brilliant masterpiece.

The Ah-Di, Hsiao-Yen, Yun-Yun one. It wasn't bad by any means, it just wasn't as compelling as the other ones.

I see, there is always a "weaker" one, but still good none the less. I wish there were more people that posted on this board. This film was excellent! *sigh*

True, it is disappointing that there is a lack of intelligent discussion regarding the film's themes, characters, narrative, etc here. Part of the fun in watching a masterpiece such as Yi yi comes from discussing it to death later. Unfortunately, this board does not fulfill that need.

As a Taiwanese, after watching hundreds of movies from all around the world, I found the best movie is in Taiwan. Yes, "Yi-Yi" is my all time favorite movie.

Actually this movie was never published in Taiwan. I finally watched it on a DVD bought from Hong Kong in 2007, which is like 7 years after it was first released. It's sad that not many Taiwanese have the chance to see this masterpiece of Edward Yang.

A perfect film indeed, as close to that as movies get anyhow. It is strange there is so little discussion here, though then again this is one of those films I just sit back and experience very emotionally and find difficult to soberly analyze and pick it apart when in the overwhelmed, bleary eyed state that watching this resonant masterwork always puts me in.

Such a clinically detached and rigorously composed film, visually similar to Antonioni -- and yet so overwhelmingly compassionate and heartbreakingly emotional. What a rare balance in cinema, so few films manage deep pathos on top of such formal panache.

Yeah, remarkable how it succeeds on its own terms, offering up close to 3 hours which contain hardly any cataclysms, any high drama or burning conflict. And yet the picture it paints of these "ordinary" lives, is vast, complex, poetically rendered. Marvelous cinematography, Yang always finding ways to shoot scenes in a manner that feels fresh as well as meaningful; you're dragged into this world of folk that ain't extraordinary yet nevertheless come to enjoy the stay. And all those 173 minutes feel vital, vibrant. Even though the issues at hand are merely mundane. Outstanding film - might fit well in the top 10 of the decade.
